quote: Nah. Anybody who thinks the Beatles were "unoriginal" simply has appalling taste. It's hilarious, also, that you rant on and on about the Beatles being "unoriginal" when Eliot Smith covered at least 9 Beatles songs (recorded one) and Daniel Johnston wrote a song called "Beatles" that include the lyrics, "Like a magical fairy tale that's hard to believe/ but it really did happen/Four lads who shook the world/ God Bless them for what they done". And Brian Wildon greatly admired the Beatles (and vice-versa). and you do realize that all three of these musicians are literally, as in clinically, mentally ill? Edited by nator, : No reason given. Prophex, I included a few clinically insane people in there because you clearly like your musicians to be, shall we say, a few cards short of a full deck.
Peter Gabriel/early GenesisDavid Bowie Joy Division The Cure The Clash Sigur Ros(Icelandic) The Sugarcubes/Bjork (Iceland) The Kinks Neil Young Radiohead Arcade Fire Can (German) Pink Floyd Richard Thompson The Who U2(Irish) King Crimson

Brian Wilson is mentally ill. He has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder.
Eliott Smith was mentally ill. He was addicted to drugs and alcohol and was clearly clinically depressed. Daniel Johnston is mentally ill. He has bipolar disorder with psychotic overtones, with a religious obsession.

One thing I am curious about, prophex...
Just what do you mean when you call The Beatles "average joes"?

quote: How is this a criticism? The reason every classic rock station plays Rush is because they are classic rock. I can pick out a Rush song instantly, because no other band in the world sounds like them.

quote: I knew it! I strongly suspected that you were totally into the idea of the "tortured soul" genre of musician, and that the more fucked up and 'pained' a musician is, the more cool you would think they are. Why is having an agenda other than making good music important for a musician? Why is it impossible to be a "true artist" if you also "live life for fun"? Edited by nator, : No reason given.

Why is it impossible to be a "true artist" if you also "live life for fun"? quote: Says who? You? "Fun" does not have to equal "frivolous", you know. According to you, all of your favorite artists were either severely mentally ill or died of drug overdoses or suicide.
quote: Bullshit.
quote: More bullshit. You really are a remarkable cliche of a teenager, you know.
quote: Who said anything about an unexamined life? Clearly, you are convinced that "life is pain" or some dreck like that.
quote: So, you love playing your instrument and you have a blast making music, but you don't have any fun when you do it. Got it. You are the typical miserable middle class teenager, I get it already. You're really deep and sensitive and you are the only one who really understands pain. Gotcha.
quote: So, what did Johnston believe about the Beatles, do you think, based upon what he wrote in his song about them? Why would Eliott Smith cover Beatles songs so many times if he didn't think their stuff was trivial and meaningless?
quote: Right. You are the arbiter of all music and philosophy, just like every other teenager in the world. Right there with you. (Of course, Smith and Johnston are both mentally ill.) Edited by nator, : No reason given.

Do you really think that drug abusers and mentally ill people "understand life" better than everyone else? quote: So, in other words, you are saying, "No, except I mean yes." Wow, you are completely over your head in this thread, aren't you?
quote: Yes. It's nothing new. Do you have any idea how many versions of "I'm an artist, nobody understands me, I'm so deep and pained" exist in this world?

Wait, are you now admitting that you completely dissed the Beatles without having listened to much of their work?
Why do you waste everyone's time, including your own?
