Forum: Coffee House Topic: Lying For Jesus Award Message Number: 242 I think I agree with Buz, at least on the Fred Phelps part of the message. Mostly, I just thought this message needed a little flagging. If everyone took a ConLaw class, this board would be less psychotic.

Thank you too. I had actually worried that that post did not make sense and had asked several members to review it to see if I had totally lost it.
Good to know that maybe the point did get across. Hearing from folk such as you and cavediver is appreciated. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Once again, I just feel I need to flag a message:
Author: PercyForum: Comparative Religions Topic: You Guys Need to Communicate! (thoughts from an ex evangelical Christian) Message Number: 56 But Harris isn't saying that religious moderates are catering to fundamentalists. I think his position is much closer to Edmund Burke's, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Challenging and questioning the beliefs of other religions would be the height of intolerance, and so is discouraged. and
Expanding a little on Harris's views of religious moderation, he also feels it is bears some significant culpability for the west's underestimation of the Islamic threat to civilization. In the religious moderate's view, Islam is actually a religion of peace, and 9/11 was just an action taking by extremist Islamic terrorists who are not representative of mainstream Islam. I think the celebration in the Islamic world that followed 9/11 gives this the lie. Islam includes a strong tradition of violence that religious moderates paper over and hence fail to recognize, to our great peril. I break those two paragraphs into seperate quotes, even thought there is nothing between them at the source. The "bolding" is mine. Are there new topic(s) in there? Especially the second "bolding"? When a member of the Christian right condemns Islam, I have a hard time taking it that seriously. When Percy does it, it really catches my attention. Moose Edited by Minnemooseus, : Very minor tweek. Message 7 I just think the response is elegant in that it said what needed to be said in a reasonably minimum amount of text.

Forum: Coffee House Topic: Clarifying The Buzsaw Position Message Number: 34 More honest self-scrutiny and fair-mindedness in one post than we normally see in an entire thread. You would have to search a long time to find a better example of the value of honest debate in the service of improved understanding. I'm impressed. Edited by Omnivorous, : No reason given.
