Sometimes I just gasp when I see
a story like this that demonstrates how brainwashed evangelicals are.
And I do it from the perspective of one who was similarly indoctrinated at one point, not as one who has no direct experience of the lifestyle.
Let's just sit and ponder the implications of the story. Three fundies who currently have super massive loyal followings are poised to engineer another love affair with a born-again Christian conservative.
Just consider Pat Robertson. Pat Robertson currently makes his living as evangelist/news commentator on charlatan-run TBN and other Christian networks. A daily feature on the 700 Club is his eye-squinting "words of knowledge" declarations of miraculous healing. He even
names people in his audience whose tumors are currently shrinking: “Leonard, your tumor is disappearing AS WE SPEAK.” (Think of the poor Leonards who might be viewing a re-run of Robertson's twisted program.)
Where is the outcry against this? How is it not plainly obvious to every rational, truth-loving person that corrupt, money grubbing, prophecy-spewing televangelists are guiding the voting choices of America’s electorate?
Millions of evangelicals support these men. That’s what’s so scary. These evangelical empires exist because Americans”and
lots of them”donate to their ministries, keeping them afloat.
I had to leave the fold before I realized how close I was to being completely brainwashed by this movement. How could evangelists, quite often
morbidly obese evangelists, command such a following when it is so plainly obvious that they are charlatans and clowns?
By reflecting on these powerful men, and other men who the church has declared its mouthpiece, I finally learned what truth is
not. It could not possibly be the truth that Pat Robertson, James Dobson, Jerry Falwell,
et al tell me it is. If they and their supporters can’t recognize that lying; money-grubbing; false prophesying and healing; and supporting illegal war with, and occupation of, Iraq are shameful things to do, then certainly they don’t have the scruples to determine whether the Christianity is the only true religion.
It’s a great comfort to at least know what truth is
not.
