Hootie
Thanks, arach, but I had to play probabilities quite a bit in that second test. The designers of that one meant business. For language know-how it would still make more sense to put Hebrew and Greek in it before Latin.
I enjoyed the wrong answers in the first one. Jonah's nickname should be Hootie.

Re: a mare among the chariots
we should so do a bible study on that book. it's so snazzy. oral sex and utter distraction. she must have been an amazing woman.
I'm with you, brenna. The world would be a better place if people read the Song a lot more and the Apocalypse a lot less.

yeah, i thought that was a little odd. the vulgate is an important text, yes, but the greek and hebrew are primary sources. perhaps it's just another instance where they went for obscurity over popularity.

agreed!

Re: a mare among the chariots
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Solomon write the Song and Proverbs while he was "going away from the truth" (as my pastor would say).
That might be why those books aren't read so much.

Re: a mare among the chariots
that explains some things. creationists aren't fond of reading heretical works--oh no! I might be corrupted!.
typical. ignore that which just might make your world richer.

That's a new one for me. Tradition does connect Solomon to the books, either as patron or author. It seems unlikely that the texts would have been placed in the canon, though, if they were thought to represent deviant beliefs.
But the unapologetic eroticism in the Song has always made more austere religious personalities uncomfortable. The Song mentions a lot of things they would rather not discuss. And it never mentions God at all.
The traditional dodge, in both Judaism and Christianity, has been to read the lovers' songs as allegories of the love between God and his people.

Re: a mare among the chariots
if they're heretical, why would they be in the bible if god is the author and maintainer of it? that just doesn't make any sense?
oh wait. fundies. right.
