It wasn't so very long ago when you could proudly say in public, "I hate
those people. They should be sent-back-where-they-came-from/locked-up/lynched/whatever."
Now there's a social stigma to that. You have to resort to such euphemisms as, "I have nothing against
those people, but they-should-get-jobs-but-not-take-
our-jobs/I-wouldn't-want-my-sister-to-marry-one/they-have-diseases/whatever."
Not wanting to be called a "bigot" is the first step on the way to not
being a bigot.
