I drew mine. It's a self-portrait.

Does anyone else have an avatar that they made themselves?
Yup.
Based on an illy of mine (I've worked as an ilustrator at various times)...

Mine is
This a photo I took in the 'bio shack' of the "Dominator" on a research cruise in the Gulf of Mexico. The photo was in response to a conflict with the kitchen crew about us storing our beasts in the galley freezer. One guy said "You aren't bringing those giant cockroaches in here". This photo was staged to 'freak them out'. Sadly, no one outside of our bio group found it humorous.
(for taxonomy-minded folks these are Bathynomus giganteus, the worlds largest known isopod, the order that includes sowbugs and roly-polies and were collected from 6,500 feet in the Gulf of Mexico. The largest in the photo is 35 cm, 14 inches long!)

Doctor Bashir: "Of all the stories you told me, which were true and which weren't?"
Elim Garak: "My dear Doctor, they're all true"
Doctor Bashir: "Even the lies?"
Elim Garak: "Especially the lies"

Re: Mine is
Had always wondered just what the hell your avatar was, but was so stupid that I never bothered to click it! Very cool
I remember on one naturalist show, they brought up an isopod from the Gulf that was much more like our common woodlouse than these - back was more rounded, grey and less distinct tail end. Must have been 9-10 inches. Awesome looking beast

Nem's avatar is cool, I think it has to do with the 3rd eye, Chakra, and aura...It's pretty nifty!

Still probably the same beast. I posed these (they were long dead) by fanning out their tails. Their closest competitor for size is 10 cm or so. There are many species in this genus so most likely saw one of those or a variation of this one.

Re: Mine is
they were long dead
How well do they survive once brought up? Fish tend to explode when you bring them up from depth - I know one naturalist that catches fish at -300m, then hypo's off their swim bladders at intervals as he comes up
