Yes, I'm all too aware that this is a rehashed topic. But, it doesn't look like this issue has been on topic for some time.
The title says it all-- I would appriciate anyone who claims that deductively reasoning (through critical analysis of available evidence) that the ToE or other scientific theories are religious in nature to convincingly defend that statement. Guess this could go in the 'Is it science?' forum, with permission?

I don't claim this, but seeing as you're asking, I thought this could be interesting to you. I was reading it the other day, because it was linked to on the EvoWiki.

First, definitions
I think that anyone who wants to defend the statement mentioned in the opening post, should first give a thorough account of his understanding of the theory of evolution, and then also give a very precise definition of the word 'religion'.
Only when everybody agrees that we are talking about the same things can we start to agree or disagree about an argument regarding these selfsame things.
So first, what exactly is the theory of evolution?
And second, what do we mean by 'religion'?

"Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science." - Charles Darwin.
Did you know that most of the time your computer is doing nothing? What if you could make it do something really useful? Like helping scientists understand diseases? Your computer could even be instrumental in finding a cure for HIV/AIDS. Wouldn't that be something? If you agree, then join World Community Grid now and download a simple, free tool that lets you and your computer do your share in helping humanity. After all, you are part of it, so why not take part in it?

Re: First, definitions
Exactly. Except this isn't done by creationists. In fact the opposite, trying to refuse to use accepted definitions is a key guideline in how creationists work. Given a vague enough definition, creationists often claim evolution is atheist and that it is a religion.

Understood
I understand your points, and I think these are great observations. Unfortunately, it looks like we haven't gotten any answers so far. However, the same topic appears to have opened in the 'Is it Science?' forum, except from the opposite perspective. Perhaps the answers lie there?
