riVeRraT writes: But I stand on my God-given right to be offensive. So go walk up to your local police and curse him out. That happens in almost every traffic stop. Do you seriously believe I don't have the right to call a cop a "pig"? Do you seriously want the police to have the power to arrest people who don't tug their forelock and say "yassa, yassa"? So this person has the right to do that, but not after 9pm when it is disturbing the peace. He might win the appeal. Ironically, he'd have a better case on free-speech grounds than if he was blasting ABBA at full volume. Help scientific research in your spare time. No cost. No obligation. riVeRraT writes: All around us, there are examples of just how not free freedom of speech really is. So, shouldn't we be concerned with making it more free instead of less? riVeRraT writes: But I am not looking to ban it. You have been advocating restrictions on broadcasting of commercials. You did suggest that Desparate Housewives ads should not be shown and that casual beheadings should not be shown. Where do you draw the line between "reasonable" restrictions and an outright ban? How do you decide how much erosion of freedom is justifiable? Help scientific research in your spare time. No cost. No obligation. Join the World Community Grid with Team EvC

riVeRraT writes: That's a tricky question isn't it? They're all tricky if you stop and think about them instead of just knee-jerk reacting.
Corupting the minds of our youth is, to me, an erosion of freedom, and much more dangerous for us, than just controlling content within time periods, and shows that are rated for children. I'm not so worried about my children having "corrupted" minds. I'd be much more worried about them having empty minds. You can't test a filter by running distilled water through it. If we want our children to learn to distinguish the good from the bad, they have to be exposed to real life, not just the sanitized version. Help scientific research in your spare time. No cost. riVeRraT writes: Yes, real life, as I have been saying all along, not the fictitous version, before there time. One of the advantages of fiction is that you can learn about life from the comfort and safety of your own living room. I'd rather have my children learn about heads being blown off that way. I'd rather have them filling their minds where I can be with them and explain things to them if necessary and comfort them if necessary. Help scientific research in your spare time. No cost. riVeRraT writes: But what about the time your not with your kids, and they happen to catch something? What about when they are in school? I'm glad if they "happen to catch something" when I'm not around. I can't think of everything to tell them so I'm glad they have other sources to get them thinking.
What about the children that aren't being supervised? I'm less concerned about "supervising" them than about being available to talk to them. I don't think my children should be deprived of a source of information just because somebody else isn't making proper use of it. Let them watch what they want. Chances are they'll be bored by the "bad" stuff anyway.(By the way, I don't approve of children watching basketball. They should be playing it, not watching it.) riVeRraT writes: You don't see a difference in "information" and things that could possibly hurt your childrens minds? No. They can't learn to filter out the bad information if they never see any. If you shield them from life, it will only make them more curious to see what you don't want them to see. There's more danger in that than in letting them make their own choices. riVeRraT writes: I do not intend to "sheild" children from life, but make life relative to their age. But you don't get to decide what's appropriate for the age of my children. If you censor the public airwaves, you're taking away my right to raise my children as I see fit. A five-year-old driving a car is a poor analogy. He presents a danger to society at large - a five-year-old watching pornography does not. Help scientific research in your spare time. No cost. No obligation. I think cow-pornography should be banned from the Internet.
