In my mind there is only one thing worse that hypocracy, and that's blind obedience to a hypocrite!
Over and over and over again in the news we see people exposed as hypocrites only to have the people who support them not only continue to do so, but come up with excuses for the person.
A recent (though certainly not most recent) example is Ted Haggard, the Fundy anti-gay preacher who was exposed as a Meth-head and a homosexual.
Then, after a good three day class in how not to be gay, he returned to his flock with open arms - a "cured" man.
Here's why I'm posting. I'm sure, given even a very brief amount of time, we could list dozens if not hundreds of examples like the one I just gave. they are legion
The problem I have is that they ALL seem to be from the political right?
Aren't there any hypocrites on the left? Maybe an openly gay senator who's actually straight? Or world reknowned atheist who's actually secretly a cardinal in the Catholic church?
Come on, hypocracy arrises from the unabashed seeking of power, doesn't it? As such, shouldn't the numbers be equal on both sides?
I put this out as a challenge to all - fundies and scientists - find me some politically left hypocrites!
Oh, and sub-note, while I'm sure we'll be able to turn up people who have said things like "Taxes are important, we should pay them." but who have themselves cheated the tax man, I'm looking for something a little more grandeous. No one likes paying taxes, that's not exactly an earthshattered revelation.

Al Gore?
What about Al Gore? Flying all around the world on fossil-fuel powered airplanes to promote his movie about how bad those fossil fuels he just used are? Having three homes, one of which has been found to use 20 times more energy than the national average?

Re: Al Gore?
His homes use non-carbon electricity, and he buys carbon offset credits when he travels. (And doesn't it produce less atmospheric carbon for 200 people to fly in one plane than for 200 people to drive in 200 cars?)
I'm not saying that Gore's carbon footprint is precisely zero, but the attempts by conservatives to portray him as some kind of free-wheeling carbon hypocrite aren't based on the facts. At any rate, it's the manufacturing/industry sectors that produce the most carbon, not the actions of private individuals.

Re: Al Gore?
Nice try.
But even if the stuff you just said were true, they still wouldn't be on par.
Gore is not going around saying - "You average person are the cause of Global Warming" and then piling up coals in his backyard and burning them for gits and shiggles.
Here's another example, a political one, Rush Limbaugh rails against drug addicts, calling them weak and pathetic. Meanwhile, he himself was addicted to drugs.
To try and express it mathematically -
Person "I hate X" meanwhile person is X.
Though, I will give you credit for at least trying.

Hypocrites from the Left, Right, and Middle
Well, we all are hypocrites to some degree, which is precisely why the Christian ethos tells us not to judge one another. But I digress.
As far as political leftists who have made contradictory statements, a few come to mind.
Obama made a speech a couple of months back about SUV's and how impractical they are, as well as a danger to the environment. But then after the speech he was seen getting in to one and driving off in to the sunset.
Then you have the whole Iraq war where 2/3 majority of the Democratic Senate voted in favor of the proposal to oust Saddam. It was only later that they changed their tune.
There. I've met the objective. Now where's my prize?

"Somewhere at the back of my father's mind, at the bottom of his heart, in the depth of his soul, there was an empty space that had once been filled by God and he never found anything else to put in it... At the centre of me is always an eternally terrible pain - a curious wild pain - a searching for something beyond what the world contains." -Bertrand Russell

This is an old, tired, worn out, boring argument. Get over it. They, along with the rest of us, were lied to and misled.

Excellent! Perfect example, if not as vile as some others. Obama was not advocating an ammendment to prevent people from driving SUVs, but still a good example.
Then you have the whole Iraq war where 2/3 majority of the Democratic Senate voted in favor of the proposal to oust Saddam.
I'm afraid I can't let this slide.
If I tell you that milk is poisonous and you vote that we ban milk. You aren't being a hypocrite, you are acting on bad information. If you later discover that I was paid a lot of money by haliburton to lie to you about milk, and you say, "Hey man, that's BS!". You still aren't being a hypocrite.

His SUV has been modified to burn ethanol.

you haven't met the objective, as those who replied to you have pointed out.
anyhow, nice to see you back (and as you can clearly tell, I'm back too . . .but . . .)

Re: Hypocrites from the Left, Right, and Middle
Why is Al Gore always the target of Zombie Lies That Will Not Die? First the whole "invented the internet" B.S., now this.
Gore's family home is not just some family home. It is:
1) home to his office, with staff working for him,
2) home to his wife's office, with staff working for her,
3) in a region with large annual shifts in temperature (cold winters, hot summers)
4) Has high security requirements and security staff on premises
For the situation, the home is very, very energy efficient. In fact, his per-foot usage is very average for Tennessee, remarkable considering the conditions, and his total use only 2 to 3x the average for his region.

I wonder of Al is still eating his tenderloin
Are you? Do any or all posters here still munch on steak and such or have you become plant protein consumers. You know, soy chicken, beef, milk, etc.?
If not, it's high time. You'll live longer, too, not making yourself subject to the diseases contained in animal flesh and the chemicals fed to them to keep them from croaking.

In fact, the United Nations Food & Agricultural Association claims that the world’s 1.5 billion cows are worse then all the cars, planes, and all other forms of transportation PUT TOGETHER. Apparently, cows are so dangerous because their “emissions” contain methane gas”a substance thought to heat the atmosphere twenty times more than the carbon dioxide that usually gets all of the press.
Forbidden!
We are talking about hypocrites, which is always others

I'd vote for banning milk in a yankee minit. What kind of chemicals does it contain much less the diseases present in animals. It is definitely a yuck food.

Soy "chicken" and soy "beef" are disgusting.
Fresh soymilk and tofu, on the other hand, are delicious.
I am not a vegetarian, but I am very particular in my animal protein consumption and I eat a lot less now than I did growing up.
quote:

Actually, some of the healthiest, most long-lived people on the planet are Okinowans, and they eat pork and fish almost every single day. (also a LOT of vegetables)
And if you don't want to eat the chemical-laden animals, buy meat from naturally-raised animals. A lot is available these days.
And as far as "diseases contained in animal flesh", the latest mass food recall in the states was E-coli-tainted bagged organic spinach. It seems that the fertilizer they were using (cow maure) wasn't sufficiently decomposed.
Veggies can kill you, too.
