Disrespectful? I know people who died of AIDS almost or completely unmourned by their families because those Christian families had been influenced by this man's hatred. Who can possibly ever know how many gay teenagers have committed suicide because they come from families that follow this bastard or people like him?I don't give a shit if it's disrespectful. I say "fuck Jerry Falwell". Today is a day to rejoice!

I've been wondering if I should make a serious attempt to try to explain why some of us are overjoyed at the death of this beast. But I don't think I could do it nearly so eloquently as Hitch did last night on CNN:

I remember that thread, Dan, and although I haven't looked it up to be sure I think I changed my mind during the course of it. I remember it got quite heated between myself and rrhain, and I think he was the one who finally convinced me I was wrong.

I was heartened to hear that none of the presidential candidates attended Falwell's funeral. It's also interesting that apparently none of the republican candidates have been invited to the dedication of Billy Graham's new library, even though three former presidents will attend. Billy Graham is one of very, very few fundie preachers who also happens to be a good man who has shown courage in a good fight. I would think that attending a function in his honor is about the most risk-free thing a republican could do to try to court favor with both liberal and conservative evangelicals. It's interesting that apparently none of them are getting that chance.
