Notice the amount of rituals there are that can bring a man to a "spiritual state", more commonly known as hypoxia (just to the degree that it causes hallucinations and poor judgment of reality).
Sleep deprivation is also a tactic used by the army to get new soldiers to obey their commanders. I know, because I've been there - it's amazing what they can make you do.
