But unless I'm very much mistaken, the freezing up is a result of his moving the thermostat off the cooling coil. Yes there is a difference between wet bulb measurements, and dry, but a well designed Evaporator should be able to run 24/7 without freezing, down to a temperature of about 60-65F. If it was a wetbulb thermometer, the only thing that should have happened, is the thing turning on and off at the wrong temp. The only mistake he may have made, is that it was not designed to bring down the temp below 75F. We would have to see the specs. It is only a temporary A/C, and not designed up to the task of cooling a room down to the desired temps. But they could have easily designed it to do so.
And the water dripping on the capacitor is likely the result of leaning the unit the wrong way. Designers of a portable A/C should know that not every floor is level, and then designed the drip pan with enough height, and a shut-off to compensate.
[quote] There is a large tray which collects water condensing on the evaporator matrix. The edges of this tray are only just barely higher than the level of the drain tube. So if the unit is not precisely level, but tilted forward by an imperceptible degree, the collected water, instead of draining down the tube, spills over the edge of the tray and begins to trickle down among the works... [\quote] I don't know where the drain goes, but the collector pan under the evaporator, is not the same as the pan that collects all the water, and needs to be dumped.

Well please explain it to me, rat, cuz I'm totally befuddled. At work, we use a portable air conditioner that matches the discription of the one this guy has. It keeps the elevator equipment cool. And although it does indeed lower the air pressure in the elevator room, that's fine because the air it sucks in comes from the hallway, which is cooled by one of the building's central units. It works beautifully, exactly the way it's supposed to work. I should think it would most certainly NOT work well if you put it in a room with a doorway that leads outside.
Once this dude equalized the air pressure he should have stopped making modifications. Everything he does from that point on seems to me a mistake. Am I wrong about the thermostat too? Will those thermostats work better if you take them off the coil? I thought that type thermostat was designed to work best mounted on the coil. Am I wrong? W.W.E.D.?

I expected to see a serious chain on mistakes by this guy, but to tell you the truth, the guy is 100% correct in all his assesments. The funny thing is the way he descibes it. I often curse out engineers when working on stuff, I got a real kick out of it. Be careful who you curse. What this guy is cursing is not mistakes or bad design, but the result of bean counters making the AC unit as cheap as possible while maximizing profits. They don't care if the design works well only that it works enough to sell. This guy bought a cheap unit and caveat emptor. When you are tasked with designing the cheapest possible air conditioner you don't design a machine that is any more than minimal in performance. That's what you have here. compare Fiocruz Genome and fight Muscular Dystrophy with Team EvC! Ok, you answered your own question.
quote: Nothing from nothing. You are sucking the cooling from the building, not removing the heat from the room, which is what an air conditioner does.
Once this dude equalized the air pressure he should have stopped making modifications. Everything he does from that point on seems to me a mistake. Well not the water spilling out the pan.
Am I wrong about the thermostat too? Will those thermostats work better if you take them off the coil? I thought that type thermostat was designed to work best mounted on the coil. Am I wrong? No, you are probably right, but the thing should not stop cooling, until the desired room temperature is reached, and it should never freeze. So there may have been another problem, which he corrected by removing the bulb, which may have caused a third problem, or revealed a third problem. This is one of the things I love most about trouble shooting, and hate it at the same time. First you have to undo all the mistakes, from all the mechanics before you, then undo the mistake, or break down that happened most recently, then possibly correct a mistake by an engineer. Room ari conditioners have their bulbs mounted on the coil, but they reached the desired temperature without shutting off the compressor, and the never freeze, unless the temp gets below 60-65f.

Y'know, at first I thought this would be something to post in a Phelps-related thread, but the more I watched it, the more I just giggled at it.
Yes, this is a hateful, awful bunch of people, but they're just...so...ridiculous. And not particularly talented. "you'll eat your kids...(Yeah, you'll EAT 'em!)" Good stuff. I can just see you, pumping the patients for their best joke
Best exit I ever saw was my Uncle Harry. Terminal, but there was always a cluster of nurses, docs, etc. hanging around his bed to hear the latest of his humour. Might be the final evo filter? Going out in style? Inspiration to others? What`s that Nil illegitemi carborundum line?

Wow, you may just have found the one funny BC cartoon.
TTFN, WK P.S. Maybe I'm just biased because of his anti-evolutionary rubbish.
