Author | Topic: How should one interpret foul language? | |||||||||||||||||||||||
susan8800  Inactive Member |
Refer to my reply to tudwell, it is well thought out and shows accurate reasoning.
Bitch definitely depends on context. In many cases it is the only appropriate word to use. There is only one meaning to the word, the foul usage of the word is an abuse of one's humanity. Edited by susan8800, : No reason given.

Please read the real content of my post.
If you understand that what I said was right, then a response is, of course, unnecessary.
Legalist/Catholic = same thing. It's what struck me straight off...honest I don't see any connection. I could be just a Christian, any denomination really. Besides maybe Mormon. I could also have been simply an individual who respects my own humanity. I could have also been familiar with the writings of a philosopher Immanuel Kant, as he wrote extensively on morality, and how to live properly as a human being. Your stereotype was off the mark.

There is only one meaning to the word, the foul usage of the word is an abuse of one's humanity. So you are bitching about some uses of the word bitch which the historical reference Webster's Dictonary defines as:
Main Entry: 1bitch Pronunciation: 'bich Function: noun Etymology: Middle English bicche, from Old English bicce 1 : the female of the dog or some other carnivorous mammals 2 a : a lewd or immoral woman b : a malicious, spiteful, or overbearing woman -- sometimes used as a generalized term of abuse 3 : something that is extremely difficult, objectionable, or unpleasant 4 : COMPLAINT Is that your bitch? Those humans who use and study the English Language have supplied the general public with Webster's Dictionaries. And the reason they're always updating dictionaries is because words change. The reason they change? The people speaking them use them differently. A hundred years ago 'nigger' was just an everyday word for a black person. Now it's extremely offensive, and not just to black people. It's offensive because the majority of people speaking English believe it to be so; they assign it its meaning. And it goes the other way, too. The Catcher in the Rye was banned by many schools because of its use of the word 'fuck', which in the fifties was highly inappropriate. Nowadays, it ain't so bad. It's all over books and movies. You even hear it on TV from time to time, unbleeped. It's not old, rich, highbrow "scholars" who control a language. It's everyday people. The "scholars" merely record it.

Funny, it matches precisely with the definitions that I provided for the words foul and foul-mouthed. Foul language is an abuse of communication and is therefore an abuse of one's humanity. Sorry, there is no way around it.

Your interactions with others should not include your favorite little phrase. Self Control, Self Control. I guess I don't understand. Did you think I used that phrase in the imperative voice? That I was telling Woodsy what to do? That couldn't be farther from the truth. I was using an example. But I'd extend the same suggestion of a maturity problem to you, as well. Is there something about that word that makes you act like you're 8 years old?

All humans should strive to live rightly. Sounds good to me. I even attempt to do so. But "living rightly" has very little to do with whether I say "shit!!!" when I get one of these Texas grass burs stuck in my finger when I'm pulling weeds. And I do "excersise self-control" - I stifle it when I am able when small children are around.***************************************** An interesting thing I heard years ago that I've never really confirmed: the Bad Cusswords in England and the US tend to be body functions, body parts, and, I guess, body wastes. The Bad Cusswords in Southern Europe and Latin America tend to be "blasphemies" - goddammit and the like. Anybody have anecdotes to back that up or refute it?

It is used by savages who lack the ability to speak eloquently. To the contrary; many of the great writers of the English language were both deeply eloquent and often profane. Would you accuse Shakespeare of lacking eloquence, simply because he wrote "Out, damn'd spot"? Then I submit to you that your immature pearl-clutching at the slightest hint of a vulgar phrase has completely clouded your judgment. It's indicative of a lack of maturity; it's the behavior of a child.

The words of an individual reflect the thoughts of that person. If they cannot form sentences and speak correctly than there is no reason for them to speak. In many cases all we have are the words of individuals, that is what we must base our judgments on. "Speak correctly?" You mean, using words as per their definitions, and using proper grammar? Sure! What does that have to do with sweat words?
We can't ignore it, we must tell them to please spend their time educating themselves... Their argument/opinion is most likely irrelevant if there are any ideas involved. Horseshit. Bollocks. An arguments validity is NOT predicated, in any way, shape, or form, on the presence or lack of certain words some members of society have identified as "profane." If I say "the sky is blue" or "the sky is fucking blue," is the second statement less valid because of the inclusion of an expletive? Every time a fundy breaks the laws of thermodynamics, Schroedinger probably kills his cat.
