Hi, I was trying to post a "Hello" but the relevant thread wouldn't allow me to post there. So, could a mod move this for me please?
I'm Female, Scottish and am a Creationist. I just found this site a few minutes ago, and am looking forward to getting a little more free time to explore it.
Hope to learn a lot here.

Hi Eilidh,
Welcome to EvC!
Why creationism as opposed to evolution?
What stripe of creationism? Young Earth or Old Earth?
Mark

Hey Eilidh, enjoy your stay - there is plenty to explore! And I can safely say that this is a wonderful place to springboard learning - I'm much more learned since I joined all those moons ago.

Welcome Welcome Welcome
Hi Eilidh and welcome to EvC! Take your time and settle in....we can start by having a discussion right here in the Coffee House. I am a Christian who believes in the probability of evolution. I see no problems with it and am unimpressed with the counter arguments put forth by many of the Biblical Creationists.
I guess I see no conflict between evolution and my faith.

Re: Welcome Welcome Welcome
Hi all, thanks for the lovely welcome. I've not really had time to view a lot of the site, so don't want to say too much at the mo.
I'm afraid I am a "Young Earth" believer. I know that doesn't go down well with most people of today.
I truly believe everybody must make up their own mind and be allowed to believe what they wish. Whether it be Evolution, Intelligent design or even fairies if they want.
I was born into a Christian home, but was taught evolution at school, so I became rather confused over the years. There was a time I even wondered if there was a God.
Then I came into contact with a Mr John McKay from "Creation Research. He has became a good friend over the years and a special blessing in my life.
Thankfully I am now in a happy contented place (well, with my faith at least)
I guess that's enough for now.
Looking forward to getting to know you all.
Eilidh

Choices
Welcome aboard.
You have a major choice to make now:
1) Do not look into any reasoning or evidence behind the age of the earth if a young earth is necessary to maintaining your faith.
Many of the Christians here will, as Phat as done, point out that you can be a solid Christian without having to take the earth as being 6,000 years old but that is for you to decide.
2) Look into the most current threads discussing the age of the earth in the Dates and Dating forum.
Age Correlations and an Old Earth: Version 1 No 3 (formerly Part III) is a concentrated look at why the idea that the earth is young is untenable. Make sure you understand what "correlations" are about before you post there. No creationist has managed to handle the contents of that thread yet.
If you dig into that you will be faced with these choices:
1) Ignore the evidence and carry on. Some can do that; others find it intellectually dishonest and disturbing.
2) Adjust you're views to that of the majority of Christians as to the age of the earth and what the Bible is actually trying to teach you.
3) Decide that you God is named Loki the trickster God of the Norse.
Good luck. You seem to be someone who is both open and honest. We welcome that here no matter what your views.

Yes, well, he may be a jolly nice chap, but I've just been looking at his website and it's full of blunders.

Re: Welcome Welcome Welcome
Hi Eilidh, welcome to EvC
I just want to stress what Nosy has just said. If you're happy with your Creation-based faith, and not particularly interested in trying to defend it nor convince others of your view, I would stay away from the main EvC debate. You will find nothing here that will strengthen your belief in Creationism.
However, if you are open to the debate and don't mind having your beliefs extensively challanged, then dive straight in

Eilidh,
I truly believe everybody must make up their own mind and be allowed to believe what they wish. Whether it be Evolution, Intelligent design or even fairies if they want.
Of course they should, but we should equally allowed to call the ones who go against the evidence as being what they are; deluded. This isn't a post-modernist exercise where all scenarios have equal veracity!

Of course.
But then, we can then ask you questions regarding your beliefs.
Such as, if you think Young Earth Creationism is correct, even though the work of hundreds of thousands of scientists in multiple diciplines over several hundred years shows this belief to be contrary to reality, what do you conclude is going on with either the scientists or God?
Is God lying? Have all the scientists been conspiring for decades to deceive the public or are they all just profoundly bad at doing science and are therefore utterly wrong in their conclusions? Why would either God or scientists do this? Why is it that today's scientists can make successfully borne-out predictions based upon the work of scientists from the past if it was all wrong?
These are the sorts of questions I always ask YEC's, and I'd love it if you wanted to start a thread to take a stab at answering them.

Re: Welcome Welcome Welcome
I'm afraid I am a "Young Earth" believer. I know that doesn't go down well with most people of today.
We'd never tell you that it's wrong because it's unpopular. Popularity of a belief is never evidence.
The problem for you is that your position is contradicted by a vast weight of verified scientific evidence.
There was a time I even wondered if there was a God.
I don't wonder, I guess, but that's not something I expect to be able to convince you on.
But saying "the Earth is 6,000 years old" isn't the same kind of thing as saying "there's a God who loves me." It's a lot more like saying "there's a ham sandwich in my refrigerator."
In other words, it's a claim of fact that, if true, evidence can be found for; and if false, evidence of its falsity can be found. And indeed we've found such evidence - abundantly.
Thankfully I am now in a happy contented place (well, with my faith at least)
Faith doesn't have anything to do with the age of the Earth. That's a factual claim that we can examine with the evidence.

That's fine, you are free to believe anything. Just please understand that it is also, simply wrong, false.
I was born into a Christian home, but was taught evolution at school, so I became rather confused over the years.
Why would that lead to confusion? There is absolutely no conflicts between Evolution and Christianity.
There was a time I even wondered if there was a God.
Good. That is always a good thing to question.
Well welcome, we look forward to finding out how you can possible justify believing in something as ridiculous as a Young Earth. Can't wait to hear some of the supporting evidence.

True, but there may be a perceived conflict. Especially if a particular interpretation of the scripture had been taught.
