Interpreter of Holy Bible responds
The first page of the old testament says, "Then God said, let us make man in our image."
...let US make man in OUR image...
...
Who is US?
P.S. Interpreters of the holy bible need not reply.
I am an interpreter of the Holy Bible. So this response is not for limbosis.
The title of this thread is "Let There Be Man". Unfortuntely, the author seems not to recognize the significance of the fact that God never said "Let there be man".
With many many other things created mentioned in Genesis God said "Let there be ..." But with man there is a change. Now God is more intimately involved than to say "Let there be ...". God becomes more intimately involved to say "Let Us create man in Our own image ...".
Unlike the light or the dry land or the sea creatures birds or the cattle, God has a council. There is a decision between the members of "Us".
This change shows the uniqueness of human beings among all the other items in creation. In the universe man is unique. Man alone is made in he image of God and after a council involving the Divine "Us".
For one who doesn't care about the interpretation of the Holy Bible this probably means nothing. But for proper handlers of the Bible the change is significant. God did not say [b]"Let there be light .... Let there be dry land ... Let there be cattle .... Let there be man ...".
The Holy Bible shows that the holy God had a council and a decision was made between the "Persons" of the great Divine "Us".
In all creation man is at the pinnacle. In the pyramid of lives man is at the top. Of course a sensible person might realize this even without the Holy Bible. Common sense should inform the average human that among all creatures on the planet man occupies a uniques place. Nothing seems to be able to compare with man or compete with man in some wonderful way.
The modern skeptic is largly befuddled into a kind of drunken stupor. He may regard man as an accident of some random process. He might consider that man is just about on the same level as crab grass or the cockroach. He might regard man as on a second rate planet circling around a second rate star in a somewhat second rate galaxy.
The Bible sets man apart in creation as having a unique place in that the Godhead held a council and a decision was made to create man in the image of God. In fact all other creation is leading up to this climax which means all creation is for man's benefit. And man is created for God's benefit.
God rests after the creation of man. He rest not out of weariness or tiredness. He rests out of satisfaction. Now with man created in the image of God and committed with the authority to reign over God's creation for God, God has reached a satisfaction.
Genesis one and two show this.

Re: Interpreter of Holy Bible responds
I wrote above:

It is the Triune God speaking. It is the Trinity which is implied in the passage.
Man was in some way made according to Christ. Christ is the image of the invisible God.
Who [Christ] is the image of the invisible God, the Firstborn of all creation ... " (Col. 1:15)
Rather than Christ coming after man's creation in some way He preceeds man's creation. The image of God into which the Trinity made man was Christ. Before the Logos was incarnated as Jesus of Nazareth man was created according to the pre-incarnate Jesus Christ.
God ... has at the last of these days spoken to us in the Son, whom He appointed Heir of all things, through whom also He made the universe; Who, being the effulgence of His glory and the impress of His substance ... (See Hebrews 1:1-3)
Christ, before His incarnation, Who was apppointed Heir of all things is the effulgence of God's glory. Man was created according to Christ. This is what it means for the Triune God to say "Let Us create man in our own image."
"Christ, who is the image of God ..." (1 Cor. 4:4)
The Trinity created man according to Christ, Who Paul says, is the image of God.
Christ speaks of His pre-incarnate existence in His great prayer for the church:
"And now, glorify Me along with Yourself Father, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. (John 17:5)
Before the world existed Christ was the effulgence of the glory of the Father. Man was created after a council of the Trinity in which it was decided that man would be created according to this Second Person of the Trinity.
" ... that they may behold My glory, which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world." (John 17:24)
Christ, loved and in the glory of the Father before the foundation of the world, was the template according to which man was created.
