The practical pragmatic reason is that threads are limited to 300 messages.
While there's nothing inherently wrong with chat-style exchanges, this board is oriented more toward and attempts to encourage thoughtful and carefully considered discussion. We do have a chat room.

Yes, sure, absolutely, that's precisely what I was saying, that lengthy bullshit is preferred over succinctness.
Just in case anyone else is confused, the concern is about a chatroom-style series of exchanges at a message board that quickly eat up the 300-message thread limit and that tend to run counter to the well-considered and deliberate approach to discussion that we like to encourage here.

Often Percy, that seems to be the norm lately. And as to the 300 message limit, that is really an artificial issue. The effort required to close one thread and open a continuation thread is minimal, and part of bringing people to EvC is that they communicate with each other. That may include exchanges between two members.
In this case, I found the exchanges in question to be pretty much on topic. They were discussions trying to outline some of the issues regarding a person who was articulate and a Biblical Creationist, as well as the dynamics of some of the people responding to that individual.

Why do we have a 300 limit rule? Presumably its so that debates don't go on for all eternity. But often what happens with popular thread that end up getting closed is that someone simply makes a sequel thread. In which case, the 300 post limit didn't really prevent anything.

However, not every one is on chat when a question needs to be asked. For instance, to my recollection I don't think I've ever seen you on Chat. How then would I be able to contact you for something?
I guess I just don't understand why all posts need to be lengthy discourses, when sometimes being brief and to the point says it all.

The 300 limit rule is a technical issue. We have had major msg loss in the past when threads get beyond 300. The last time we thought the issue was taken care of and let threads go beyond 300 we found that we were mistaken. The thread was corrupted beyond any possibility of reclaiming the data. Hopefully when the next iteration of the board comes out that will not be an issue. Until then we stick to the 300 rule.

When a moderator uses up a post to say, "Topic Reminder! Remember the topic, people!" I don't find that particularly helpful. It would be nice if they told us what their idea of on-topic and off-topic was.

It seems it might be a good idea to keep a limit anyway. Haven't we seen that threads are improved with a regrouping and restarting every so often.

If you can't recognize the insults being thrown at me from taz, then I will defend myself every time, using whatever language I see fit, unless there is a freedom of speech problem here.
Just remember, I am not the one starting it. What taz has claimed on me, is highly insulting.
As far as what is going on in my personal life, has nothing to do with it, I am just sick and tired of people getting away with breaking the rules, at my expense in this forum, and your unwarranted moderation of me, just proves it. Why not warn the person who started it?
You can't just go around accusing whole groups of people, that they think slavery is a great idea. That is called prejudice, and should not be tolerated on any level in this forum.
