That "reason" isn't very enlightening. It might as well say, "Because we say so."

Emoticons and smilies have zero literary value.
I'll remember that when I'm rewriting Hamlet.
In real-life conversations, however, I will continue to give face-to-face feedback to people I am talking to.
And since the Internet is a conversational medium, I will continue to use (and encourage the use) of emoticons. In the spirit of Mark Twain, it's better to use a smilie to indicate that you're joking than to have people think you're just an idiot.
Case in point, somebody who constantly has his messages "misunderstood" should unstuff his "power of words" shirt and use every means at his disposal to convey his meaning.

It’s better to keep your emoticons private and let people think you’re an idiot than to make them public and remove all doubt.
If you're going to trumpet the virtues of literacy, turning a proverb on its head might not be the best way to do it.
You, of all people, desparately need emoticons.

And I say yes to sarcasm....
Remember that we deal with a lot of very literal-minded people around here.
If not for them, the place need not exist.
Some of them wouldn't recognize sarcasm, etc. if it sat down beside them in church.
The emoticons are for them.
And for those of us who tend to be a tad forceful, the emoticons signal to our friends that our words are meant to bite their heads off only figuratively.

Why would anybody want to debate you one-on-one when you can't be bothered to read the threads? You need to show us what you can do before anybody's likely to invest much time in you.

Alphabetization
When jar uses "TrueChristian" as his screen name, how come it still alphabetizes as "jar"?

Re: Alphabetization
It was in the Online Now list.
I tried various things to "put jar in his place". I refreshed, I deleted cookies, I restarted Internet Explorer. Now that I think of it... I had to log in again because I had deleted cookies, but my name was still on the list.
He isn't online right now. I'll have to see where he goes when he comes back.
Just curious, anyway,
