I have the power!
minnemooseus writes:
I ask members - Can you close your eyes, think of something you have seen, and bring up a mental image?
Yes.
It helps with spelling - if I've seen a word, I can spell it. If I want to reread a paragraph in a book, I can remember where it was on the page - though finding the correct page, or even the book, can be difficult.
It isn't infallible, unfortunately. I keep the grocery list in my head, but if there is one thing I need today, it's pretty certain that I'll forget that one thing.
The same ability also applies to navigation. If I've been somewhere, I can find it again, without regard to directions, landmarks, etc. I just "know" where it is and how to get there.
On the other hand, all numbers look the same to me. If you ask me for a phone number, I can visualize literally any combination of digits.

This may not be on topic, but I'll add it anyway:
One day, I was walking down the street, listening to heavy metal on my Walkman. A car waited for me to cross in front of it. When it moved, I heard a squeak and remarked to myself that he had a loose fanbelt.
Then I said to myself, "Wait a minute. How could I hear a squeak over the loud music?" Then I realized that I actually smelled burning rubber. I had transposed one sense for another in my mind, without realizing it.

Do you dream in colour?
Are you good at trivia?
Do songs run through your head?

"Replay" scenes from your life.
(I "preview" things that are going to happen - interviews, etc.)

... what the hell do you do when you read a book?
Don't you imagine (image-ine) everything?
How can you read the Bible without picturing Charlton Heston as Moses?
How can you read For Whom the Bell Tolls without picturing Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman?

left = north, right = south
Chiroptera writes:
... I would have to physically turn so that I was facing the same direction as the chair in order to remember left from right.
I used to have a friend who lived out of town, so she was always asking me for directions. But by "directions", she meant "instructions" where to turn left, right, etc.
I had to visualize the route and when I had to tell her to go north, for example, I'd have to stop and look at my hands and tell her "left".
Another thing, when I look at a map, it always has to have north facing north. I find it easier to read a map upside down than to transpose the directions in my head.

I am very bad with compass directions but great with the left/right thing, and landmarks.
I have found this to possibly an issue of gender.
A few years ago, on the Canadian TV show The Nature of Things, there was an episode about "How People Get Lost" (not the real title).
Apparently, people navigate in two fundamentally different ways:
1. By landmarks and by left/right instructions.
2. By the "survey method" - what I call "a big map in the head".
Women tend to use method #1 and men tend to use method #2, though the gender distinction is not universal.
Jokingly, I tell people that that is why men never ask for directions. We may not know where we are or how to get where we're going, but we know what direction it is.

Re: Rate your mental 'senses'
Sounds just like my dad. He could tell you how to fix a tractor that the neighbours had in 1928, but he couldn't tell you whether or not he had had lunch today.
I agree that the senses tend to run together. Like schrafinator pointed out, taste and smell are almost indistinguishable.
When I try to recall something, or even imagine something that never happened, visual images seem to come easiest and aural images next. I find sensations of touch difficult to actively recall.
On the other hand, when memories are spontaneous (which seems to be more frequently as time progresses) it is more of a total experience rather than individual senses.

(I also draw out the States of America as though they were seperate countries for fun), but I can't visualise any of this in my head.
I can name the 50 states by visualizing the map and counting on my fingers - but if I miss one, it's almost impossible to figure out which one. (I can also name most of the state capitals by "replaying" what I've heard on Jeopardy, etc.)
