Suppose God created the universe, and the earth
and populated it with dinosaurs.
He then, after watching them for a few million years
decided that they were a bad idea, so he deluged the
planet, encasing them all in sedimentary rocks,
and started again.
This time he made some ape-like things, and thought
that's a bit better, but I could still do more.
So he wipes out that bunch, and creates Adam and Eve.
'Yes!' he says got that right ... well until they go a bit
crazy.
Would God bother to tell us all that, or just start with
the need-to-know bits?

I thought it was a city in the middle east somewheres
But I think most people would understand the apocalyptic
common-or-garden usage of the term (if only from the
Bruce Willis movie)

Just out of curiosity, and in light or recent global
events, in what way do you thing monarchs are any different
to the systems of government in the US and the UK
at present?

Maybe I'm just cynical, but there is a huge difference
between things written into law and the way our leaders
behave ... and even King John had his magna carta
Yes, a president or prime minister is elected, but once in office
their powers are used in a manner not dissimilar to monarchs
of old. They do as they please in the interests of 'national
security' or 'the people' ... but seem to operate in a way
that mainly benefits themselves and their associates.
I could never bring myself to trust anyone who actively seeks
power. I agree with Frank Herbert on that ... 'power attracts
the corruptible'.

My problem is that I really see no difference.
What control do we really have over any legislation that
is passed?
Our parliaments and senates are not dissimilar to the courts
of Kings and Queens and Emperors of the past. They do what they
feel is necessary, and few who seek power are much concerned
with the good of their fellow man. Those who are tend to get
nailed to trees or shot.
Any autocrasy is not actually run by a single person, it is ruled
by a group that support a single person in all of their
decisions. These decisions are not made based upon the 'will
of the people'.
If the president or prime minister says we shall spend 4billion
more on 'defence' this year, it's not a proposition put to the
electorate ... it's a statement of what has been decided. If a
leader wishes to pass a new law, all he needs is enough supporters
(this was still the case in monarchies of old if you didn't want
to end up in a bloody civil war).
One should not confuse 'free societies' with 'democratic' ones.

Re:
Actually I thought the elves turning up was bad!!!
An event that was a milestone in human development in
middle earth (i.e. standing on their own two feet without
mystical aid) was tarnished by the helpful elvish folk.

By not voting aren't you voting for the 'current power'
by default?

Then we're no better than a monarchy.
There's nothing much wrong with autocrasy .... it's
just the kind of people who want to be in power that
are the problem ... and that goes for ANY system of
government that we currently know of.
Someone who seeks power is the last person you should
give it to!!!!
