I was recently in a hotel room and discovered both a Bible and a Book of Mormon. Having never had hands on access to BoM, I flipped it open to a random page and read a couple random passages.
I was intregued by how Biblical sounding it was. There were a lot of "beholds" as in "And behold, saith the Lord of the vineyard, I take away many of these young and tender branches..."
"Behold" is an interesting word, it has a sort of Biblical weightiness to it. It's not something you throw around in day to day conversation.
Curious to see it repeated so many times, I did a little search online. Here's what I found:
Book of Mormon - search for the word "behold" returns 928 hits in 531 pages, or almost 2/page.
Holy Bible - 590 "behold"s in 1281 pages, less that 1/2pages.
Seems like either there was a hell of a lot more to "behold" on the magic missing golden plates, or John Smith thought it would make the story sound more like the Bible. So much like the Bible, that it in fact sounds nothing like the Bible.
Go figure.
