1 Dog
5 Cats (indoor- official dog intimidators) 1 Cat (outdoor - official mouser) 1 geiko 3 goats 25 chickens *** But when all is said and done, I'm a cat person. Litter box, bowl of food and water. Life is simple. And no other animal sprawls like a cat. When I come home from a hard day and see one of our felines draped over an easy chair like a limp dish rag, totally oblivious to the world, it takes the sting out of the day's frustrations. (:raig

Tazmanius Devilus asks:
quote: Cuz people have issues. I should point out that the current standard for purebreds is very different than what it was when my parents had their dogs. Take a look at the current Siamese, for example. Their faces are practically darts. They're nothing but long bones and pointy parts. But look back to the 50s, and they didn't look like that. The pugs we had lived long lives. Rrhain Thank you for your submission to Science. Your paper was reviewed by a jury of seventh graders so that they could look for balance and to allow them to make up their own minds. We are sorry to say that they found your paper "bogus," specifically describing the section on the laboratory work "boring." We regret that we will be unable to publish your work at this time.

Your example of Siamese cats is a really good one - the Siamese from fifty years ago were nasty, brutish and short - at least compared to the modern ones. But they were robust and didn't have the whole catalogue of congenital difficulties, such as respiration problems, that today's Siamese exhibit. They might also (though I'm not sure) actually have had some genuine historic link to an Asian breed of cat - I don't know.
But whatever, I'm pretty sure that the bizarre, unhealthy form that Siamese have been twisted into has been informed by ideas of 'the Orient' and 'exotic'; the same thing that made the Siamese in Lady and the Tramp the way they are. Its quite sad really.

I like them both for different reasons. I have both a cat and a dog and appreciate their different qualities.

Really? God must not like them then, because all the pugs I know (I regularly socialize with dog owners within 40 miles of where I live) have just about every health problem you can imagine in a dog. Still have the previously mentioned Hiss and Squeak.
Last March I adopted another shelter cat, Teddy. He is black and white, about 3 years old (same as Squeak) and likes to get into anything physically possible. A couple of weeks ago I started "home sheltering" (aka "adopted") another shelter cat, Marvin. Marvin is about 8 years old, a generic looking tabby, and is blind or near blind in one eye. So now I have two "one eyed" cats. Marvin had been at the shelter a long time, and they finally adopted him out as a barn cat last July. The story is, about a week later Marvin disappeared. It ended up that he made the +/- 5 mile hike back into town to his old hanging grounds. Eventually he ended up back at the shelter and was then brought into the veterinary clinic where I am the cleaning person. He had a couple of injured front toes which ended up being amputated. Anyhow, all this indicated to me that I should adopt Marvin. I have discovered, via communication with the previous owners, that Hiss is at least a couple of years older that I previously thought. She is currently designated as being 15, but may be even older. A few months back I brought Hiss into the clinic because I thought she had a growth on her belly. A litter closer examination revealed that it was just a clump of matted fur (D'oh). But they noticed that she has lost weight and did blood tests. Found out she has kidney failure. So now Hiss is on a special kidney diet (with one variation having added canola and olive oil). She also continues to get her daily dausiquin supplement (good for joints and bladder) and now also gets a daily potassium supplement. She also gets a daily 1/4 pill for high blood pressure and a daily shot of Zantac for stomach discomfort/nausea so she will eat better (she is currently 6 pounds, down from an in her prime 10 pounds). She also gets 250 ml of Ringers Lactate (glorified water) subcutaneously every other day. This functions as kitty dialysis. I all, Hiss has become high maintenance - she does seem to be reasonably healthy and comfortable for the shape she's in. One thing nice, I do have a good heath program at work - For the cats, not for me. I get services and supplies at the employee discount or less (I get the Ringers at cost). Still, I managed to run up a $700 cat bill this year. I suspect that without the special discounts it could easily be twice a much. Summary - 4 cats, 6 good eyes. Two ~3 year olds, an ~8 year old, and an ~15 year old. Hiss and Squeak and Teddy and Marvin. Moose btw - Hiss is the "grinning" cat of avatars past, and also the current avatar cat. I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but I recently heard a statistic claiming that the average pet dog eats more protein in a week than the average sub-Saharan African person. Makes you think again doesn't it.
Cats don't get off lightly either; they are a menace to wildlife. A friends moggy killed an endangered water vole a while ago. I'm not saying don't keep pets, just that having a huge pack of enormous dogs or loads of cats is possibly not the most responsible move. Just for the record, I like cats better. Mutate and Survive

What I don't get is how some people can claim dogs are better than cats when the theory that dogs are better than cats is just a theory and it's a self evident axiom that cats are better.
I really dispair at the level of knowledge on this forum sometimes.
