I've always considered him as a hoax and huxter, out primarily for $$ and deception. I've consitently warned other Christians of this as well.
The Penticostal and the Roman Catholic segment of Christianity have been quite prominent in scandalous conduct. Jimmy Jones, Jimmie Swaggart, Jimmie Bakker and now Oral Roberts are some of the Penticostals that come to mind. The bloody inquisitions of the Dark Ages and the recent homosexual scandals by priests come to mind relative to RCs. I find it necessary often to distiguish the RC from mainline Protestantism when it comes to violence related debates.
I've always questioned the term "holiness" which is often a word used in connection with the Penticostal movement. Imo it's largely due to an underlying doctrinal problem. The movement has this notion that you get this so called 2nd blessing, i.e. Baptism of Holy Spirit evidenced by speaking in unknown tongues etc. So many figure after the allegedly get this, they've
arrived and forget maintaining good works and Biblical principles.
I make this point because the more conservative denominations of the Christian community get lumped in with the Penticostal and R Catholic variety when it comes to the scandals.
This is not to say that the more conservative organizations and denominations don't have their share of scandal and doctrinal problems. I'm just wanting the folks here to know that we who do not practice scandalous activity should not be lumped in with these organizations and that we abhor their conduct.
This is also not to say that there are not good penticostal pastors, leaders, churches and organizations. I know of many that are devout and genuine brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. Some good and devout ones may be or have been members of EvC as well.
