Fidelity has nothing to do with the quality of the music. Oh, now we're talking about "quality"? Somebody stop those goalposts!
It's the performance that makes it human, as opposed to mechanical. It's the same sound in both cases, Ringo, with different amounts of noise on top of the signal. I like my signal-to-noise ratio to be high. You, apparently, take the opposite view. That's fine. Perhaps at your next concert you'd like to cram cotton balls into your ears; then you could have a really enjoyable experience, since apparently you like it better the less of the music you can actually hear.
If you hadn't noticed, the thread is about passion for music. Oh, that's right. I missed that this was yet another thread for insufferable music snobbery. You're right that I can't possibly be someone who enjoys music unless I like exactly the same music as you, in exactly the same way, as chosen from an extremely narrow catalog of "songs I heard working at the dinosaur quarry." Gosh, would you like to tell me that my hair is too long, now, Grampa?

... apparently you like it better the less of the music you can actually hear. No. Just the opposite. I like to hear all of the performance, including the parts that digital recording removes. You can call it "noise" if you like.
I missed that this was yet another thread for insufferable music snobbery. It seems to me that the insufferable snobs are the ones who whine about flaws in sound reproduction.
You're right that I can't possibly be someone who enjoys music unless I like exactly the same music as you.... I haven't criticized anybody's taste in music. I simply pointed out the common error you made in confusing the reproduction with the real thing.
Gosh, would you like to tell me that my hair is too long, now, Grampa? I am too lazy right now to post links, but here is a list of my heavy rotation:

As you can see my tastes are all over the place. I don't listen to a lot of country, but I do like some "countryish" folk - check out a band called Hem - and I like Johnny Cash and The Dixie Chicks (some songs) and I don't listen to a lot of hip-hop, besides Outkast and Mos Def (and I did like Public Enemy and KRS-One back in the day, but I haven't listened to them in ages). Nod to crash: I like Delerium and there is another band that I associate with them - B-Tribe. It's not music I usually listen to just to listen to, but it is damn good sex music Edited by Jaderis, : No reason given. "You are metaphysicians. My musical tastes are quite wide, I think I like what is good from a wide variety of styles. My first love is real punk (both old and classic):
Modern Lovers, Ramones, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, The Freeze, Crucifux, DOA, Millions of Dead Cops, Suicidal Tendencies (first album, before they sold out to become crap), Fear, and Forgotten Rebels. To name a few. I also like a lot of classic rock/metal/psychodelia: Cream, Doors, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Cat Stevens, Beatles, Rolling Stones (although I am pissed at them, a different story, bastards owe me!), Donovan, CSN&Y, Procol Harem, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Eric Burdon & the Animals, Styx. Very incomplete list, but again to name a few. Individual bands/people across all genre I love: Gene Krupa, Arlo Guthrie, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Hank Williams sr., Roy Orbison, Jimmy Cliff, The Wailers, all of Michael Franti's projects (the Beatnigs, Disposable Heroes of the HipHopcrisy, Spearhead), Morphine, G-love and the Special Sauce, Soundtrack to Hair (play not the crappy movie), Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Nirvana, Black Uhuru, Mutabaruka, and Linton Kwesi Johnson. Again to name a few! "I have seen so far because I have stood on the bloated corpses of my competitors" - Dr Burgess Bowder

I have found that what is really a blast is to play music rather than to listen to it.
I started out performing country music in grade school, then in high school I played rock and symphonic music (our "school band" was a symphony orchestra; such luck!). These days, I play early (medieval and renaissance) music. I love the intricacy, amazing ingenuity, and the wonderful beauty of early music. I have heard that one's taste in popular music gets set in high school. I really like folk rock and acid rock, so you can guess my age. Just for curiosity, does anyone else find that a lot of current pop songs lack decent melodies? I hear very few songs with tunes that one might whistle later. I wonder why that is. I noticed some time ago that scientific and technical people are often keen musicians. The early music group I play in are all scientists and medical people, and many other scientists I have known have been musical. This seems unexpected somehow.

Not listened to Juno Reactor for some time, but I used to be into that sort of music quite a lot. Seemed like everyone that was into hallucinogenic drugs were into Juno Reactor and other related bands. I still listen to Shpongle a lot, especially now they've gotten more techy.

I'm into most music. I've got a passion for jazz, as you might discern from my screen name (from Joe Zawinul, keyboardist of Weather Report). I'm also into electronic / dance music, and make my own quite a lot.
Despite my atheist stance, my favourite band is Take 6, an acapella group who sing songs that are so Christian that even Jesus might get fed up of it after a while. But they're brilliant.

quote: I've noticed this as well (Brian May the guitarist from Queen for example has a phd in astronomy from the prestigious Imperial College of London). I think there’s something about well-made precise music that appeals to the meticulous nature of scientists and engineers. Lots of my humanities buddies on the other hand tend to be into weird dissonant punk rock that can only be appreciated if you know the philosophy behind it. Edited by Zawi, : No reason given.

but I do like some "countryish" folk - check out a band called Hem Hem! Yes. Thank you for reminding me to grab Half-Acre off iTunes, something I've been meaning to do.

Seriously, though. Nobody else is into Delerium? Can't say I've heard of them, but then again, I wanted to hear of music I hadn't heard before, so I guess that's a good thing. Got an audio files that you can format to EvC? "It is better to shun the bait, than struggle in the snare." -Ravi Zacharias

I don't listen to a lot of hip-hop, besides Outkast and Mos Def (and I did like Public Enemy and KRS-One back in the day, but I haven't listened to them in ages). That's because most hip hop has lost its roots. Its the same with this Nu-metal stuff.... Most of it is caca, IMO. But then again, doesn't every generation claim that theirs is "keeping it real?" I mean, yes, one would expect music to evolve with new sounds, but I'm finding it harder and harder to identify with some of the newer acts in these two genres. I suppose this is why I find most similarities with underground acts. I only like a few mainstream acts. Most people aren't musically refined enough to understand complex time signatures. They just identify with catchy music. "It is better to shun the bait, than struggle in the snare." -Ravi Zacharias

Definitely agree with that, all the new stuff has no substance. I grew up listening to stuff like KRS-one (who I think is just amazing), Common, Gangstarr etc. IMO Hip hop is not the most intelectual of music (with exception to people like KRS one), that's why I switched to metal when I was in grade 12. Been a Tool fan ever since and that will never change. The new stuff is regurjitated garbage.

Wow, you really like the 70's and 80's style progessive rock, most of which I'm into as well.
I particularly like that you have Transiberian Orchestra, Vic Wooten, Yes, Rush and Bela Fleck. "It is better to shun the bait, than struggle in the snare." -Ravi Zacharias
