Blech. How imprecise and dissonant. The whole history of musical invention has been about the precise reproduction of specific waveforms. Thank goodness for the invention of computers which finally made that possible. (Although I've always found the electromechanical tone wheels of the Hammond organ kind of quaint.) All I've heard of computer generated music sounds like computer generated music, show me a computer that can improvise.

Show me a live band that can automatically generate an arpeggio loop.

Excuse me for being old, but what the heck is an arpeggio loop. I've studied music for over 50 years and i can say I've never heard that term.

Some one off albums--such as Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds" album from the 70s. Never listened to the whole album, but that includes one of my favorite pieces of music, very haunting, perfect for this time of year.

...show me a computer that can improvise. Something at least somewhat in that area:

It's threads like this one that makes me really depress. Am I the only person left in the world that only listens to classical? My rotations are between romantic, classical, modern classical, and jazz. As I read through this thread, I recognized absolutely none of the names you guys mentioned. Makes me sad to think I'm the only one here who knows who Michael Collin and Byron Strippling are.

I don't know if it's your intent, but you've reminded me very much of the two complains of the snobbish music lover: 1) I don't recognize any of the musicians you like; you must not have any taste in music. 2) You don't recognize any of the musicians I like; you must not have any taste in music. Again, I'm not saying you're a snob, but it's super-easy to fall into snobbery when talking about music, I've noticed.

Don't get me wrong. I don't feel depressed because you guys don't like the same music that I do. I feel depressed because I'm part of a to-be extinct species of music lover. I feel sad because, as you might put it, I'm not part of the norm. It has nothing to do with you guys.

I'm listening to the Pat Metheny Group right now, and I have tickets for the Pat Metheny Trio here next week. Does that help?
And while I am here--I saw an amazing show by Joe Bonamassa last week. The guy is incredible. Cheers.

A friend of mine and I went to a concert a the Santa Fe Opera House in the early 80s. After a bit of substance abuse in the parking lot we went to find the line for the concert and somehow wound up at the backstage entrance. Still holding a quart bottle of Bud, I asked some guys standing around watching the roadies unload equipment if they knew where the line was for the concert and one kinda onry lookin' fellow gave me directions.
Well, the onry lookin' fellow and his group were onstage an hour later. Hey, I didn't know what he looked like, just knew them through the music. Have just seen Rush four times on their current tour... and got to finally meet them (well, Ged and Al at least) I am so very not worthy... have also seen this year: Gabriel, Genesis, Roger Waters, Fish, plus a few smaller less known 'proggy' bands of varying quality. Rush, Genesis, Yes and Pink Floyd are my classic all-time faves, but newer obsessions have included the likes of Sigur Ros.

Seriously, though. Nobody else is into Delerium? you're more likely to find people who like delerium than people who like front line assembly and skinny puppy. i have a friend who's in skinny puppy, and he refers to delerium as "a way to make money." i do have two delerium cds on my computer, but honestly don't listen to them enough to have considered buying them. as for other "generic pop techno" i did recently purchase a copy of moby's "play" on vinyl...

NIN, aye? What do you think of the former guitarists split when he formed his own band? richard patrick, now of filter? alright, i guess. he was a touring guitarist for, iirc, the broken era, and appears on pretty hate machine very breifly. the drummer of similar standing, and close friend of trent's, chris vrenna also has his own project now called "tweaker" which is pretty decent. neither are particularly as good as NIN still is.
