1/14/2007 8:05:13 AM|World Community Grid|Unrecoverable error for result 10000405-10000806_1 (WU download error: couldn't get input files: fcg1.10000405.faa -114 user requested transfer abort)
The task was finished on the 11th but kept aborting the download\upload to the grid. I had to abort it to get new data, and thus lost the finished module.

Re: task download problem
looks like we need to keep watch on all those computers we have running these tasks to make sure they aren't twiddling electronic thumbs eh?
or is there some setting to auto-abort if can't send for x days?

worldgrid newsletter information
Every little 'bit' helps ...
quote:
Since World Community Grid's launch in November 2004, more than 500,000 devices have been registered. The computer power that our volunteer community has donated equals one PC running nonstop for more than 76,000 years, an average of 1,000 years a week! World Community Grid's sheer power would rank it among the top five super computers in the world, allowing researchers to shave years, if not decades, off the time it would have taken to run their research on available computers.
As a result, World Community is now able to run five projects simultaneously, making World Community Grid the only public grid to achieve this milestone. Thank you for the computing resources that you provide to make this possible.
Pretty awesome for a bunch of old bitty machines. But the job is not done: we need more new members.
quote:
World Community Grid and BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing), an open-source software platform for distributed computing using volunteered resources, have worked together to create an exciting new version of the BOINC agent. World Community Grid has supported the use of the BOINC software for grid computing since November 2005. World Community Grid is a major contributor to the open source development community that supports BOINC and helps to extend the reach of distributed computing for research. BOINC also allows us to support Linux and Mac users on World Community Grid. This new version of the agent contains a number of features to make it easy and fun to use. The BOINC software is available for Windows, Linux and Mac.
Some of the important features of this new version include:
  • Easy to use, intuitive interface
  • Pictures and graphics from the research project your computer is working on
  • The ability to change important settings from the agent so that you can easily and quickly control the agent's behavior
  • Multi-processor support that fully utilizes the new dual core processors that come in most new computers, enabling twice as many computations to be performed
  • CPU throttle that allows you to limit what percent of your processor is used by the agent, helping you minimize the heat produced on a laptop and reduce any impact the agent has on your computer
  • Memory throttle that allows you to limit what percent of your computer's memory is used to help eliminate any impact that the agent is having on your computer's performance
  • Workunit cache that allows more than one work unit to be downloaded at a time, ensuring that your computer has work to process even if you disconnect from the network
  • Easy access to messages that explain what the agent is doing and shows diagnostic information if problems occur
Let's go through the new BOINC agent software and take an in-depth look at the features.
You can set the CPU % right on the preferences form. The preferences window can be found by clicking on the preferences link at the bottom of the main window.
For the rest see:
World Community Grid
Enjoy

welcome aboard!
To join go to
World Community Grid
After you join as a member, join our team by selecting "join a team" and then go to {T section page 3} to pick "Team EvC" to join ("Team" is part of the team name, so we are the Team EvC Team).
You may want to switch to the BOINC agent -- it seems a little more efficient, and you can easily set the %CPU, rather than the UD throttle settings.

Wait a day and see what happens - they only update team data once a day. I doubt the team will be credited with your past, but I don't really know.

Good News Jar!
latest newsletter:
quote:
Dear RAZD,
World Community Grid is pleased to announce that Phase 1 of the Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy (HCMD) project is coming to a close. This project, which launched on December 19, 2006, will have run for just over seven months by the time the final results for Phase 1 are returned. During this time 106,000 members will have donated more than 8,000 years of computer time on 154,000 different computers. This is a significant contribution to muscular dystrophy research.
In a few months, we'll be launching new projects for cancer, dengue fever, and climate prediction. All of these important projects need your computer time.
Enjoy.

Latest Newsletter:

Dear RAZD,
Welcome to World Community Grid's newsletter!
Over the last six months, World Community Grid's community has made significant accomplishments. Three projects have been completed, and two new projects have been launched.

BOINC Migration

World Community Grid is pleased to announce that it has made the decision to migrate entirely to BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing). This software platform has been in use by World Community Grid since November 2005. It was added originally to provide support for users of the Linux and Macintosh operating systems, but due to its popularity, World Community Grid also has supported BOINC on Windows since December 2005. Today, approximately 50% of all runtime is returned by computers running the BOINC agent, and 80% of new computer registrations are using the BOINC software.
Check your agent and download and install the BOINC manager if you aren't using it (I think it's a better manager anyway).
Enjoy.

Dear RAZD,
Help Conquer Cancer project announcement:
World Community Grid takes great pleasure in announcing its newest research project: Help Conquer Cancer, sponsored by the Ontario Cancer Institute in Canada. The mission of Help Conquer Cancer is to improve the results of protein X-ray crystallography, which helps researchers not only annotate parts of the human proteome, but importantly improves their understanding of cancer initiation, progression, and treatment. For more information about this research project, click here. For additional announcement information about this project, please click here.
Help Conquer Cancer runs only on the BOINC client. For more information about BOINC see the last article in this newsletter.
