Re: From pottery to canyons....?
I believe that men hadn't spread far enough to have civilizations, let alone different ones. You might believe that, but the facts are otherwise. The east coast of the US was occupied over 20,000 years ago. The Jomon Pottery of Japan goes back to 10,000 BCE and they were producing works of art like these and this. Immigration has been a problem Since 1607!

Re: From pottery to canyons....?
"...the facts are otherwise...." Excuse me. It was my mistake. There's a 2000-year (well, 2008-year) difference between 5767 years ago and 5767 B.C.. Civilizations started around 4,000 B.C., which would be 6,000 years ago. So, yes, I do think that there were multiple civilizations and quite a bit of difference 5767 years ago.

Re: From pottery to canyons....?
Well, sorry, but civilization was around LONG before 4000 BCE, as you can see from advanced pottery from all over the world going back considerably further. It also depends on what you mean by "Civilization". There were extensive cities back then, trade covering most of the world, transportation, domesticated animals, evidence of beginnings of agriculture. One of the neat things from that period are the shells found at Indian Knoll, Kentucky. They were making jewelery from shells from all over, the west coast, east coast, north east and gulf. That indicates a pretty extensive trading network stretching all across North America by about 3000 BCE or about 5000 years ago. Immigration has been a problem Since 1607!

Re: From pottery to canyons....?
I remember that there was one civilized city that was around 6,000 B.C., or something.

Re: From pottery to canyons....?
We are constantly find older cities. One of the great new tools has been satellite photography. One other great thing we have been able to find, an indication that may be even better than the cities themselves, are the signs of irrigation canals. We are also finding more and more examples of early developments in North America and South America, like the current dig at Monte Verde in Chili that dates back to at least 14,000 years ago and the Topper site in South Carolina. Immigration has been a problem Since 1607!

Re: From pottery to canyons....?
That's pretty cool, but how are we getting off-topic again, not to back away.

Re: From pottery to canyons....?
As long as we are looking at the world and environment 5767 (actually 5768 now) years ago I don't see how it is off topic. The facts are that we are finding new indications almost daily that by 5000 or so years ago most of the basics that define human civilization, trade, pottery, agriculture, community projects, art, technology was not just beginning but had spread all over the globe. Immigration has been a problem Since 1607!

Re: From pottery to canyons....?
But wait weren't you just saying that this was off topic. What caused you to change your mind? Anyways, I agree that they had great pieces of artwork, very detailed and each piece told a story of it's own. If people just took the time to examine this they would learn a ton about what was going on in the world at that time.

On the topic
But wait weren't you just saying that this was off topic. What caused you to change your mind? What I said was that the nonsense about the Great Wetting that Never Happened was off topic. I even provided links to threads where such nonsense would actually be on topic. But most anything related to "The world and environment 5767 years ago" would be pretty much on topic. Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!
