10:00Teaching Evolution and Creationism
A new report by the National Academy of Sciences emphasizes the importance of teaching evolution in public schools. We'll look at what the Academy says and why creationism does not belong in the science classroom.

Guests

John Calvert, A geologist and lawyer, John Calvert is Managing Director of Intelligent Design Network, inc. He is also co-author (with William S. Harris, PhD) of Intelligent Design: The Scientific Alternative to Evolution (National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly, Autumn 2003)

Toby Horn, Toby M. Horn is co-director of the Carnegie Academy for Science Education at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, D.C. She also taught at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County, Va., and established one of the first precollege biotechnology programs there.

David Masci, Senior Research Fellow at the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life

when you post, please cite a time signature so people can tell that you're actually posting from the show.

now, i'm listening to it live, so i'm gonna list the time on my clock, not the time on the show, later i'll replay and use the

10:40 (john calvert) the biggest problem with materialism is that it leaves me without a purpose (mainly because i'm not smart enough to give my own life purpose)

10:47 (alan leshner) we've learned a lot about the mind and it's not tangible in the same way as a rock, but we can measure it and observe it... maybe what you mean by materialism is what i see as observable, testable, reproducable... anything outside of that is not science.
i think it belongs in the coffee house, but it's such a hot issue that it's better left somewhere else.

Edited by AdminPhat, : Brenn got carried away complaining about another member...which would have distracted from her otherwise good topic
