Thanks ...
The reason I am posting here now, is that I was diagnosed with bladder cancer this week. It is early in the process for me, since my treatment (Chemo) will not start until my bladder heals from the biopsy, but the prognosis is very good that I will fully recover.
Keep us posted. This is now your thread too. If you are like me you had some direction, knowing what was coming, but also some uncertainty about what it was like. There are lots of sources of information, to the point of being overwhelming. At some point you just set it aside and trust in the future.
I just saw references to this thread yesterday. I have to say THANKS, your courage, optimism and determination are an inspiration. I am really glad to hear that you are feeling better.
You too will find the strength to get through this. Do you know what your stage is yet?
I have studied evolutionary biology most of my life, but I have learned so much more in the past month from you and others here on the evolution side of the debate. It has really helped me clarify my understanding of the evidence of the evolutionary history of life on the earth and also my personal intrest group, the dragonflies.
My dad tells a story from when we (3 boys) were still in elementary school. He used to take us to potential sites for field trips for his students for his (university) intro biology classes. This particular site was a bog, and there was a dragonfly there that I remember as having a ~4" wingspan two brown bars across each wing - I know this because I caught one and we put it up on the butterfly and bug board we had at home a 4'x8' board that got pretty covered over the years. I don't remember the species. Anyway, he went with the college students and there were a couple of football players that were not getting much done, so he assigned them to catch this dragonfly. By the end of the day they were wet, dirty and tired ... and not successful.
That taught me that size, strength and athletic ability didn't always win the day.
Enjoy.

Re: Update
Hi Tanypteryx,
I'm sorry to hear about your illness, but glad that you caught it early. That's the main thing, and it gives you a very good chance of seeing it off. It's little short of miraculous what can be done for cancer patients these days. There will doubtless be some difficult days ahead, but keep smiling and you will find the strength.
I have no prayers to offer, so I can only my very best wishes for your speedy recovery. Keep us posted.
Love and respect, Granny

Tanypteryx, I just wanted you to know about something Team EvC has been doing for the last two years to hopefully help fight cancer and other things.
We have a Team that is part of the World Wide Grid that contributes computer processing time to science research. You can read about the research projects here and in HIV Cancer Diabetes MDA and more - Solve on your computer.

Ain't that the truth.
Sucks, don't it.
Well I plan on voting but that is about our only hope to get rid of the US Mangled Care system.

Re: Update
Ask your doctor and nurses about cancer support groups. I have one that pays for prescriptions and expenses up to $500 per year. I also live in a state (one of two) that paid a portion of my wages while I was in the hospital, and that was a major assistance.
Ask your hospital what programs they have available.
It's like looking for grant money or scholarships - there is help available but it won't necessarily look for you.
Good luck.

Re: Thanks ...

If you are like me you had some direction, knowing what was coming, but also some uncertainty about what it was like.
Actually Wednesday, the first information I had was that the biopsy showed cancer, but no other details. It was too late in the day to get ahold of the urologist for more information so I was experiencing some pretty wildly fluctuating thoughts and emotions. Once my wife and I had a few tears, we started trying to get ourselves organized and making tentative plans depending on how serious my cancer turned out to be. I had not expected the biopsy to show cancer because the urologist really thought thought something else was causing my symptoms, so I had put the possibility of cancer out of my mind.
You too will find the strength to get through this. Do you know what your stage is yet?
Thursday I got all the details. I have grade 2/3 papillary transitional cell carcinoma. It is only affecting the inner layer of the bladder. The recovery rate for this cancer is very high, about 85%. It often recurs, so I will have to be monitored for the rest of my life. The treatment is pretty straight forward. A solution containing Bovine Tuberculosis Bascillus is injected into the bladder and held for a couple hours. This bacterium is pretty nasty and can be fatal if introduce into the bloodstream. The doctor said that by the second or third treatment I will swear he injected me with liquid fire, so I guess I am in for some interesting times.
Compared to many people, you could say I have a pretty mild case and I certainly do not face the ordeal that you and many other have had to endure.
That taught me that size, strength and athletic ability didn't always win the day.
Catching a dragonfly is a bit like trying to hit a baseball that can dodge. I am pretty good with a net, but I have some friends that are absolutely amazing at bagging dragonflies.
Thanks for your encouragement!

Welcome to the club. I asked my Doctor when I can be considered cured, and he said "when you die of something else."
New Years resolution: die of something else.
Enjoy.

I'm voting too, but while the candidates and congress talk about health care a lot, they never make it better. I just cannot believe that a government agency could possibly do a worse job managing health care than insurance companies whose purpose is to maximise profits by avoiding paying out benefits. They seem to think if they bury us in incomprehensible and contrdictory paper work we will drown before they have to pay. Well they better watch out.....THE BABY BOOMERS ARE COMING.......

Razd, I think that most of us here would rather you not be in any hurry to fulfill this resolution anytime soon! Please wait to die of something else in a year far far away!

Well, I'll be dogged. That's a new one on me. Are there other treatments that you must endure along with liquid fire or is it just the TB?
Compared to many people, you could say I have a pretty mild case and I certainly do not face the ordeal that you and many other have had to endure.
Hey. Cancer is cancer. No picnic anyway you slice it.
Keep us updated. I haven't any prayers either -- but all 10 of my fingers and all 10 of my toes are crossed!
Hey. I just thought of something. Can't they knock you out during the procedure? I mean, is there a medical reason why you have to stay awake?
