Re: Runners and hoppers
My observations would confirm that size is important.
Small birds, like sparrows, almost always hop.
Large birds almost always walk.
Those in between (blackbirds, crows) may use either or both.
Starlings are the smallest bird I know of that use walking almost exclusively.
I don't entirely believe your explanation, however. The birds that use both modes do not seem to pay that much attention to the roughness of the terrain. They'll use both modes over quite flat terrain. Crows seem to use hopping for speed - instead of running (although they more often walk than hop). Blackbirds on the other hand do run and rarely, if ever, walk (although they mostly hop).
I'd agree that the energy cost of hopping increases more quickly with mass. I can see another difference, too - in predator avoidance strategies. Running is better for getting under cover (blackbirds run, crouched down, when threatened - or they fly). Hopping is easier to turn into a takeoff.

Re: Generally speaking
It depends on what science, what are your goals, how tiring is your work, etc.
I suggest you open a Coffee House thread with a bit more info on what you are your aims.
Yes, that's true, there are far too many variables to account for. I may open a thread in the coffee house regarding this.
However, NWR, do you have a degree in science? If not, do you hold another type of degree? Are there any tidbits of counsel you would have benefited from if you had to go back to school and do it again? (That's assuming, of course, you are no longer attending school).

Re: Generally speaking
My degree is in mathematics and my current university position is in computer science. My experience is that students who attempt to complete a degree while holding down a full time job have a difficult time of it. And it is surely harder in physics, chemistry, biology than it is in mathematics or computer science.

Re: Generally speaking
Are lab hours and lab fees the prime or one of the leading reasons for difficulty juggling a full-time job and classes?

Re: Generally speaking
I would not think lab fees would be a big problem. Lab time and study time are the biggest problem. Somebody with a full time job has not only that job, but other commitments related to the job that eat into the time. And science classes typically require a larger study time commitment than to classes in other disciplines.

Re-Just a Question
Hi Guys,
I was reading in my Bible about a coming event in the future. It says the earth is going to melt with frevent heat.
If what I have read is true the earth was at one time a molten glob at thousands of degrees kevin.
My question:
If at some point the earth was to reach such a temperature again that the earth is a molten glob and then cools back down life appears and gets to the point it is today would they be able to determine the age of the earth to include our time frame or would knowledge cease somewhere in the hot lava?

I don't think that I follow your reasoning.
If the Bible is reliable, and the Bible says that the Earth will melt at some time in the future, then this has damn-all to do with the question of whether the Earth was molten in the past.
That is something that science tells us, not the Bible.

And you will continue to be kicked out of chat. Take a 48 hour break and in the future, think before you open your mouth.
Next step is banned. Do NOT push me.

I was in chat for part of your conversation with Trixie. What you report in Message 40 is a thoroughly dishonest account of what I saw.

I don't consider rape awful
I've studied it
I've seen pictures of the victims
I also interviewed one

It just so happens that nwr was in chat when you actually stated verbatim what I now have as my signature. Additionally, just after he left, jar came in and saw the rest of the exchange. For anybody interested in what went on in chat, take a look at my new, super-duper signature and you will see why I ended up using all caps.

Between them, nwr and jar can confirm that you actually said what I claim you said and additionally, nwr can confirm that you made the majority of the statements AFTER you were informed that you were actually talking to a victim of rape.

Amen, do you wish to deny that you said the words that appear in my signature? I typed them into WordPad as they appeared on the screen when I realised just how crass you were being.

I am aware that this is a quick questions thread, but I feel that I deserve a right to reply to Amen's fictitious and downright dishonest description of what happened tonight in chat.

Edited by Trixie, : I've just seen Amen's proposed new thread and I will move a copy of this post to it as soon as the topic is released. I will say nothing further on this subject in this thread, since this is not what the thread is about. In the interests of a right to reply to his accusations in his OP of his proposed new thread, I request that his thread be opened as soon as is convenient.
Edited by Trixie, : Can I request that a copy of the chat log beplaced in Amen's new thread when it is released? If it is not released, can a copy be placed here?

Re: chatroom problem
But Trixie, we all know that if you're a good christian you have to follow the laws in the bible, which tells us that a rape victim should be stoned to death (Deut 22:23-24), and Amen is a good christian.
