Then I'd probably be in a lot of trouble if I'm in the UK. I started looking like that when I was like 7.

Just for fun, I was suspended for having hair that was too long. I ignored the suspension, kept coming to school and threatened to cause all merry hell with the local press.
Incidentally, that might be a good idea for Trixie. Write a piece on how the school is putting the health of children at risk, maybe even get a local GP to sign it too and send it in with a PS advising that the local papers will receive a copy if the policy remains.

.....but there's a snag. The school thinks the policy is idiotic, the community health professionals think the policy is idiotic, the equivqualent of the County Council think the policy is idiotic. The instigator of this piece of PC madness is the Scottish Govt and they're my employers!!!
Luckily I'm employed in an area of science far, far removed from this, but I have to watch what I do as I'm a civil servant and there are various nasty, little rules governing Civil Service code of conduct.

Question, Trixie:
Do your school(s) check for the lice in the schools and then send letters home if it is found in one or more students or do your schools depend on reportings from chemists? It wasn't clear from your post and my own experience as a child in Florida schools was that we got checked by our teachers periodically and were sent to the nurse and then home if we were found to have lice. I'm not sure if the parents got letters. That doesn't really matter, though. It is simply curiosity. My point in replying is to mention a method of getting rid of headlice that will probably not be as worrisome as the recommended treatment you mention. Recently, my nephew had headlice repeatedly and everyone was wondering how he got it so often. We discovered that his best friend's mother had enrolled her family in a lice shampoo trial and the entire family was infected with lice (repeatedly) to test a new treatment and she failed to inform her son's friends' parents (until a couple of months ago). Anyway, my mother (his grandmother) discovered that a treatment of olive oil works wonders. Of course, it is more time consuming than a chemical treatment, but it has worked so far (he got it 4 times in the last year before the friend's mother fessed up). All you have to do it soak the hair with olive oil and wrap it in plastic wrap for about 2 hours. Then take off the plastic wrap and use a fine toothed comb to remove the now drowned lice and the eggs. Then wash with regular shampoo. As long as the kid uses a towel to sit back on furniture it's fine. It also leaves the hair nice and shiny for a while This is not clinically tested, I know, but it worked every time. No chemicals, easy and cheap. "You are metaphysicians. You can prove anything by metaphysics; and having done so, every metaphysician can prove every other metaphysician wrong--to his own satisfaction. You are anarchists in the realm of thought. And you are mad cosmos-makers. Each of you dwells in a cosmos of his own making, created out of his own fancies and desires. You do not know the real world in which you live, and your thinking has no place in the real world except in so far as it is phenomena of mental aberration." -The Iron Heel by Jack London "Hazards exist that are not marked" - some bar in Chelsea

Don't think I'd put malathion on my head or anyone elses.
I did get head lice once while out of town staying in a motel doing time domain electromagnetic surveys. Bought a bottle of rubbing alcohol, poured it in my hair, and worked it in. Took a shower to rinse it out. Killed them all instantly and I didn't bring it home. P.S. this is an anecdotal story and not backed by medical "science" or any comprehensive study. It is therefore, on the EvC forum, regarded as probably a delusion on my part and in fact never really happened.

It's the talk of rubbing alcohol which reminded me of this.
A friend of mine was trying to rid her Red Setter of sheep ticks it had picked up on a walk and was dabbing petrol on each tick to make it remove it's mouthparts from the skin. The method actually works very well and is quick and painless for dog or human - no tweazers, no tugging, no mouthparts left in to set up an infection. The dog then sauntered off in the direction of the back door where her husband as sitting. At the moment the dog was approaching, he was lighting a cigarrette. WHOOOOOOSH!!!!!!!!!!! The dog barrelled past, flames trailing, and belly-flopped into the garden pond. It then emerged, begraggled, minus quite a bit of fur and ticks, draped in pondweed and with an indignant look upon it's face.

Am I thick? How can you manage simultaneous treatment when the treatment is down to the parents and they won't let the parents know if and when there is an outbreak? Don't the parents see their children every day? I believe the idea is for every parent to check their own kids heads regularly to prevent an out break and if I had young kids I would be checking mine own head too. Lighten up a bit, Trixie, head lice are a natural phenomena and were around before they started pulling trees down to make the paper to inform the parents there are nits in school. You know, the kids actually don't give a monkey's until parents, teachers, school authorities and the health dept, kick up. We all had them when I was a kid. We always had bug shampoo and a bug comb. I still keep a bottle of bug shampoo because my grandkids get them and they generously pass them to me when we cuddle. No big deal. Jeez my head's itchy.

Your friend should have the girls hair cut instead of putting them through that distress. Your friend is creating that distress not the bugs or the school. Hair grows back you know, and when the girls are old enough and responsible enough they can have their hair any way they like.
There seems to be a lack of responsible decision making from what is in the best interests of the children. Edited by Heinrik, : No reason given.

An easy no-nonsense light-hearted approach would be the best solution. Sounds good to me.
It would certainly prevent a lot of pain, distress and money too. The kids probably would prefer it given the choice, but they are a bit young to make that decision.

If a child presents with consistent or repeated headlice infection despite information and support to parents to treat the recurring headlice infection, health professionals and school staff should jointly consider what action to take next. If the family is experiencing difficulties which prevent the parents from treating the headlice infection effectively, they may need additional or special help from the health service or local authority social work services at home. The Children (Scotland) Act 1995 requires the local authority to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in need, with the assistance of other agencies, including health services Trixie writes: Am I thick? How can you manage simultaneous treatment when the treatment is down to the parents and they won't let the parents know if and when there is an outbreak? Unfortunately, that's what it's come down to: living in a state reeking of Stalinistic self-righteous totalitarianism, never missing the opportunity to remind you of its authority and power over every aspect of your life, such as the upbringing of your children, while at the same time asserting its righteous control over what is and isn't offensive (to whom?) despite the obvious conflict between the various ideological manifestos (i.e. your child mustn't get lice but we're not going to tell you if there's an outbreak). The French got it right in 1789. "We must respect the law, not let it blind us away from the basic principles of fairness, justice and freedom"

We were poor working class in the U.K. but my neice in Australia is not poor, sends her kids to 'good' day care and still her kids get them. Where are you from?
