Re: Ben Stein on the Interview Circuit
I love how being a well known (movie star) person and writing a book can make you an authority on anything. He certainly was lobbed softballs and hit all the standard talking points.
Anyone see any mention of the actual science done by IDologists to test the concepts?
Enjoy.

Yes, yes.
Such a noise.
Which is why, if one googles "evolution" at amazon.com, one finds 21,822 hits and if one googles "intelligent design", one finds 635 hits. Over half of which are engineering books. Of the remaining 300 or so, half of those are critical of ID. Leaving about 150 books on ID. About a tenth of the number of hits you get with "alien abduction".

Tell it to Taz. He seems to think the atheists are outnumbered.

It's more than what I think. It's a fact. The overwhelming majority of Americans are christians, which is why no politician who is not a christian can ever be elected into a high level office. Even the most liberal of candidates have to say over and over that they are men of faith (christian).
By the way, as of this morning, I am no longer an atheist. I accept the God Prometheus as my personal savior.

I forgot how much fun this could be... I was hoping 'the girl' whould have said it. She's much too easy.
So it's not just party affiliation then... eh Taz?
It's the Christians who actually ''believe the Bible' (creation) who are in the minority?
That's a different thing...
As long as you know the difference. Don't forget that anyone can claim be a Christian... even jar.
It's such a shame he's not here any longer.
I must weep now...

Even if we are talking about the christians who are creationists, we're still talking about the majority of the population.

The girl? Who's that?

Haha, even you?
Anyway, you might want to reconsider your acceptance of Jesus as your personal savior. All he did was went through a day of suffering for your sins. The God Prometheus, however, gave us fire and tricked the other gods into accepting bone rapped in animal fat as offerings rather than the meat and other essential items that mankind badly needed at the time. In essence, he gave us fire, technology, poetry, medicine, astronomy, mathematics, navigation, philosophy, architecture, and many other arts. This was directly against other gods' wishes and so Prometheus paid dearly for it. He was tied up and everyday a vulture would come and eat his liver and every night his liver would regenerate only to be eaten again the next day. This went on for millenia before the Greek Hero Heracles killed the vulture.
In other words, the God Prometheus gave you everything you ever had, everything you have, and everything you will have. He is the true savior of mankind and the light of the world.
Edited by Taz, : No reason given.
Edited by True Believer, : Added siggy

Thou shalt accept Prometheus as thy savior for HE is the true light of Humanity and the World.

ha ha ha.. yes... even me!
If only Prometheus could raise me from the dead you'd have a point.
He may have given me everything, but I am going to die and lose it all anyhow. No sense getting too caught up in it you know?
Now we had better tow the line. I get the impression Percy is not kidding around these days.
It's nice to see some things don't change. I always loved absolutes. You slave you...

This Isn't a Discussion Thread
This thread is in the [forum=-17] forum and isn't really a discussion thread. There's no reason there can't be some reaction or commentary or even a little back and forth, but for the most part threads in this forum act as a collecting ground for information on a narrow topic.
If there's interest in having a discussion about the movie then someone should propose a thread.

News You Can Use
This was just posted on Pharyngula:
PZ Meyers, accompanied by Richard Dawkins, tried to see the movie Expelled as it was showing in a local theater. Meyers was pulled out of line by the theater management, accompanied by a uniformed security guard, and told he wasn't allowed to enter. Dawkins was allowed in without any problem.
Too funny.

Rats and roaches live by competition under the laws of supply and demand; it is the privilege of human beings to live under the laws of justice and mercy. -- Wendell Berry

Re: News You Can Use
From Pharyngula:
PZ Myers writes:
Nobody had a ticket. You reserved a seat online, and they checked your name off their list at the front of the line.
I was not trying to sneak in. I reserved my seats under my own name.
I was called aside by a security guard, who asked if my name was PZ Myers, and who said that the producer had specifically asked that I be removed.
So I presume Richard Dawkins had also reserved a seat online? I wonder if he used his own name. Since he's in the movie maybe they felt they shouldn't prevent him from attending a screening.
Here's a review of the movie by Roger Moore of the Orlando Sentinel. They apparently attempted to prevent his attendance, but he got in anyway. The review includes a YouTube clip that no longer works, so I wonder if the producers requested it be removed.
You know what's worst about this for me, at least until I actually get to see the movie? I like Ben Stein, or did.

ID was needed to gain entry, so he'd have probably shown his passport. Also from pharyngula:
PZ Myers writes:
This was a private screening with no admission charge, and you had to reserve seats ahead of time; you also had to sign a promise that you wouldn't record the movie while you were there, and they were checking ID...
I was the only person evicted. The people I was with, which included my wife, my daughter Skatje, her boyfriend Collin, Richard Dawkins, and the entire staff of the Richard Dawkins Foundation, were overlooked. I was the lucky one.
Also a more strongly worded report from another perspective with Dawkins in covert mode.

Re: News You Can Use
The Youtube clip worked for me. Seven and a half minutes, the last few filled with blatant scare tactics....Please leave now if you're a scientist with any hope for your future....you may lose your friends and even your job....
I've certainly lost the huge amount of respect I once had for Ben Stein.

Oh, it's just the film's trailer.
My version of Internet Explorer, which is 7.0, won't play it because he's rendered an ampersand as a literal. This one should work for anyone:
