Right from the start I remembered that it was a translation termination factor, which is a protein...
From Molecular Cell Biology 5th ed - Lodish et al pp. 125-131.
I googled eRF1 and found something interesting here which basically implies that eukariotic polypeptide chain release factors can also work in bacteria (which still amazes me).
