Neil Shubin, the PI that supervised Tiktaalik's excavation, has written a very fine treatment, at a nicely non-specialist level, on how we know that we're related to the rest of life on this planet. Highly recommended to all, particularly creationists.
Your Inner Fish - A Journey Into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body ISBN 13:978-0-375-42447-2
I bought this just a month or so ago, it's on my stack of unread books about 3 from the top, but I'll move it to the top, so I should get to it in another week or so.
I'm getting close to halfway through. So far I'd say the book is well worth it. I found the explanations of embryological limb development difficult to follow, mostly because of ambiguous word choices, but the parts about how paleontological expeditions are carried out are very interesting and informative.
I thought the description of the embryonic arches & the nerves, muscles & bones associated with each particularly informative. With the circuitous roots of cranial nerves making sense only in the light of our ancestry & no sense whatsoever from an ID point of view superb.
I'm about half way too. I guess it being light isn't a problem now. I like it a lot and will lend it around to friends that I know will like it. There are lots of great details (like the nerves) that would be interesting to see discussed here.
Of course, that would mean the IDists would have to actually read it. Not going to happen.
