3) Stern didn't get his paper peer reviewed (as is required for publication in a peer reviewed journal, obviously), only reviewing it himself
I don't think there was any evidence that the paper wasn't submitted for peer review, although obviously we don't know who to and there is some contention as to how rigorous the process may have been. It has also been suggested that another editor of the journal should have been involved in the review process which is one of the issues the 'Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington' raised in their statement on the matter.
