Bottom line: In a country of 60 million people there were 52 deaths due to guns in 2007 and 784 murders in total. In the US: "In 2004, the most recent year for which figures are available, an average of about 81 people died every day from gunfire in the united states. All told 29,569 people were killed that year by firearms" Go figure...........  surely end of conversation?

I truly hope that your government never becomes corrupt. We know the crooks are getting more plentiful in UK. What would you do if it got to the point the police was just as corrupt as the crooks and you could not even tell them apart except for the uniform. I guess our government has been evolving for well over half a millenium longer than yours - if you manage to get to our stage, you'll probably feel sufficiently comfortable to let go of those guns

40 people per million killed by a firearm in a year compared to the UK's less than 1 people per million... surely end of conversation?

It does suggest that they believe what the media is telling them. Again, perhaps in 700 years or so you might just have a press that actually isn't scared of its own government The press have been scaremongering crime for all time - as one BBC journalist asked the other day, when the latest figures were released (paraphrase from memory) "so do you think we the press have been responsible for making the public believe that crime has been increasing when in fact it has been decreasing?" related link here

2. the second amendment is a response by our ancestors to thier ancestors, after reading thier dribble on the past two pages it is so obvious that the founding fathers knew so much about the british back then that so adequately applies to british today. welcome back Artemis - you're far funnier when not suspended

i think you are misquoting him. i did a simple google search of heinlein quotes, and i could not find those quotes. yet you speak of dishonesty. made you sad geek of the week, for insisting on an internet link to a literary quote and then followed by this little gem

Personally, I would like more guns about. I'd like to carry one myself and assume the man next to me also has one. I bet that all these assholes I bump into on the streets of St Louis would be far more cordial if they thought I was packing. That they "know" that I'm not yields all sorts of assholishness that I bump into everyday (well, maybe not everyday, but all the days that I do go downtown. I mean, no body ever says "excuse me" anymore. No simple "hellos", nothing but a bunch of assholes bumping into each other without remark. It sucks ass. Nobody is friendly and it really "grinds my gears" [thanks Peter Griffen]. I honestly believe that if all of the law abiding citizens were "packing", then those assholes would be less assholish. Its that fact that we really cannot do anything about it, that permits the behavior. Now, having a gun on your hip doesn't mean you could actually "do anything" about it. Their use is strictly regulated. But it certainly, to me, makes people more friendly to each other. No talking shit or failing to excuse thyself would not be "acceptable" and people would be more cordial.) Gotta say, CS, that has to be one of the scariest paragraphs I have ever read on EvC  Edited by cavediver, : No reason given.

My nationality is irrelevant and your constantly bringing up the fact that myself and other posters are British, as though it were relevant smacks of xenophobia. It's also quite dull. Au contraire - I've pissed myself laughing at many of Arty's comments. What was that about having tons of ammo regarding UK Law and do you really think it only "smacks" of xenophobia? Though to be fair, it is probably just a large dose of inferiority - we should give him a break Apologies to AZPaul for the off-topicness - I have a hunch he will make a post complaining about this...
