Just heard on Fox News that some band has been banned from playing at some place anymore because one of the singers made a joke about GWBush's legs between songs.
I just can't wait until the 9'x16' oil paintings of Dubya in that fdorky flight suit start popping up in town squares across America, and roving gangs of "Young Republicans" are given carte blanch to beat those overheard speaking ill of the Unholy Trinity (Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld)...

Fox makes fun of itself a lot in programmes like The Simpsons - I live in England so I don't know much about American television networks (or British networks at that!). Could you call it a reliable news source?
If so then I can only say

Actually, I think it is probably more a case of the writers of the Simpsons have so much power within the network (because they are a major financial contributor) that the suits can't do much about what they say.

Absolutely NOT.
It is the right-wing wacko news network.
The worst is that idiot Bill O'Reilly. He passes off scoffing and shouting down anyone who disagrees with him as something that is supposed to be journalism.

I know of at least one occasion that "The X-Files" also poked some fun at the Fox network. It was in the situation (in the context of the program) of there being an autopsy of what turned out to be a fake alian.

OK, so basically we can't confirm - then - that someone banned this band for making fun of the US President?

Depends on who you ask. Some people praise FOX News for covering all sides of the issues (i.e. Hannity and Colmes, a show with one host from each end of the political spectrum). Others demonize it as being right wing, just as many accuse most American media of left-wing biases (the last estimate I heard said that 3% of those producing news broadcasts on CNN, NBC, etc. identify themselves as conservative whereas 34% of the American public does so). Personally, I stick with your good ole BBC .

Um, Colmes is not a liberal. He's a centrist.
There is no Left in the United States of any importance.

The problem with this, of course, is that it confuses the reporters with the editors. While it is true that the reporters tend to skew to the Democrats, the editors skew to the Republicans. The New York Times, for example, that supposed bastion of liberalism, couldn't bring itself to use the word "gay" except when making a direct quote of somebody until somewhat recently. Instead, it always used the term "homosexual."
Another example is the press coverage of Bush Sr., Clinton, Dole, Gore, and Bush Jr. Clinton received the most negative press of any president in history. When Clinton ran against Dole, he again received much more negative press and less positive press than Dole. When Gore was running against Bush Jr., Gore received more negative press and Bush Jr. received more positive. Take, for example, Gore's alleged illegal fundraising at a Buddhist temple and compare it to Bush's alleged going AWOL from the military. Gore's actions were covered much more in depth and for a greater amount of time than Bush's.
There's an interesting book from Eric Alterman called What Liberal Media? that points out just how false this impression is. I'd have to go look it up, but there's a site that details all of the errors in fact that Coulter made in her best-selling book, Slander, which supposedly exposed the liberal media (if I recall correctly, she didn't make it past the first page before stating something that wasn't true.)
Fox, being the upstart broadcast network in the US (having to fight the well-established NBC, ABC, and CBS), is mostly concerned with ratings and will do anything outrageous in order to generate it. You know all these "reality marriage" shows such as The Bachelor and For Love or Money? Fox started it all with Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire? Thus, following the trend we see in Right-dominated radio, they have skewed to the Right.

Hi Schraf,
While I agree with you that Fox and particularly that nitwit O'Reilly provide absolutely crap news coverage I would have to agree with Rhrain that there is absolutely NO good news coverage by major papers or networks in the U.S.
The New York Times is supposedly a left newspaper...try reading something from the left wing in Europe. The right wing is also a bit different in its presentation, though the right wing (not the far right) in Germany would be far to the left of the democratic party in the U.S...like Gore Vidal said, the U.S. has a two party system with two right wings..(my paraphrasing)
I subscribe to the Economist...it is a conservative UK weekly. I disagree with them on a lot of issues (particularly since regaring either Iraq or the UK..they are so disappointed with the failure of the torries they have taken up the US republican banner and absolutely uncritically cheerlead every stupid thing Bush says or does)...but they cover areas of the world in depth that the major news outlets in the US would never mention...and living in Germany as an American..what the hell else would I read in English?..Time (crap)...Newsweek (more crap)..Herald Tribune...USA Today?.
I also read some news in German and watch the nightly news...but I don't find their news outlets to be a whole lot better than what there is in the US except that they do a better job of covering science...overall, media coverage of world events, politics, etc. is really pretty pathetic.

Life in Central Virginia
Yes. What happened is that at Borders Books cafe, a singer (who is also a body builder) said between songs that the Pres ought to start lifting weights since he has chicken legs. Somebody complained and the local (Fredericksburg, VA) Borders banned the singer. I think that you can find the story at the Fred, VA newspaper website.

I'm with the hairy one above (post #8). I'm so totally out of touch with US-based media that I feel like a total idiot when someone mentions the latest US political whatever. I also subscribe to the Economist, and for the same reasons: it covers a lot of places like CEE, the 'stans, and Sub-Saharan Africa that US journalists never heard of let alone can't pronounce. When I get desperate, I tune in to CNN ("journalism by soundbite"), BBC World (more and more resembling their US cousins, apparently), and EuroNews (if I see one more day-long coverage of some stupid trucker's strike in France I'm gonna test the flight characteristics of my TV - I live on the fourth floor so it should be a valid experiment).
Bottom line - I know nothing about Fox News except from what I hear people argue about, and I know even less about the liberal or conservative bias of US news media. I used to subscribe to both Newsleak and Useless News and World Distort (ostensibly to balance things out), but after awhile I couldn't find the energy to make the distinctions any more. Suggestions?

That seems about right. Sorry I didn't catch the details - I don't usually pay much attention to FOXnews but I was flipping through the channels and they were showing a video of Bush jogging, so I stopped. Didn't catch/remember the name of the place (I'm thinking they said Borders, apparently some of the larger ones host bands now and then?) or where it happened, but yes - the band was banned form playing there again because of remarks made by the singer re: Bush's legs...

I don't have the direct link, but that is available on the Spinsanity website.
Coulter claimed, for example, this supposed bias because, I believe it was the Times, used the phrase "right-wing" x-number of times while it only used the phrase "left-wing" some much less number of times. The Spinsanity article did the same search Coulter did, and she was right in numbers only - most of the time "right-wing" was used it was in the Sports section, which Coulter neglected to inform her readers.
Typical conservative disinformation.

Just confirms my suspicion that in the fading-superpower category, the USA has taken over where the Soviet Union left off. So is FOX News the new Pravda or the new Izvestya? Nzdrovie!
