I had the same question about the too hot/cold for life theory of the 12th planet. Just as I thought that it was impossible to bear life on a planet too far from the sun, the book (the 12th planet) stated that Venus (I think) is further away from the Sun than Earth, but it is actually a much hotter planet. Apparently, some planets in our solar system retain heat. It had something to do with the atmosphere of that particular planet and the gasses that it produces. Hope that helps. If you haven't read this book I suggest you do... I can't put it down. Cheers JT
