Analysis of the remains of the recently discovered Aerosteon riocoloradensis shows signs that it used an intermediary lung type between reptiles and birds. Cool stuff.

I considered using exaption; it's both a better term and the one the article actually uses but I chose "pre-adaption" as I think it is a better known term.
(edit)Actually, thinking about it I'm not sure exaption is a better term. Pre-adaption had the distinct advantage that it explains what it is talking about in a way that exaption doesn't; it's a term you can understand rather than simply knowing. There is a problem with teleological misunderstandings; but I'm not convinced that the possibility of such is a good reason to use a different term.
