Was up visiting friends and we went for a walk in the evening to get a last look at the houses who had lights up. We took their four-year-old and saw the bright planet in the sky. "So, what's that planet?" I was asked. Partly because of having a small child to show off to and partly because my brain really does work this way, the words coming out of my mouth were as follows:
"Well, it isn't Mars because it isn't red. It isn't Jupiter because it isn't yellow. It isn't Saturn because it isn't deeper yellow. It isn't Uranus because my eyes aren't that good to see it and Uranus never gets that bright. It isn't Mercury because it's too far from the sun. Therefore, it must be Venus."
Yes...I'm unable to simply say, "That's Venus." No, I have to go through all the things that it is not and by process of elimination, figure out what it is.

Thank you for your submission to Science. Your paper was reviewed by a jury of seventh graders so that they could look for balance and to allow them to make up their own minds. We are sorry to say that they found your paper "bogus," specifically describing the section on the laboratory work "boring." We regret that we will be unable to publish your work at this time.
