It's pretty simple, really. You start with common sense, and once that is exhausted science has to take over to make any additional progress.
So for people who are satisfied living in a pre-scientific world, common sense is probably held in high regard. For all the others, it needs to be approached with a lot of skepticism.
Things that we don't yet understand, are not likely to be understood via common sense. I think it has largely played its role by now.
