Could someone pleae tell me about this? I have just had 2 sisters visit me and give me a book subtitled Another Testament Of Jesus Christ. It looks like an alternative Bible and I would like to invite discussions on this.
I have visited their website and gleaned a little about their beliefs. I have read about missionary work undertaken by some Mormons, help they give during times of disaster and so on. However, I want to hear more of it in a "real world" context. By this I mean actual words from other Mormons about their religion, how they live and so on.
As an aside I feel I must add that their church looks beautiful, especially one picture of it lit up at night.
One of those two sisters I mentioned explained to me their religion's origin (and their bible contains a foreword & testimonies signifying those 8 witnesses' objectivity). They will return on August 20th to have a further chat with me about my thoughts on their holy book. I have started reading some of it, but I need to prepare for 2 interviews scheduled for me next week (hence why I invited them to return a week after that).
I would like to know more about it through people instead of organisations providing web-based blurb. Does anyone here practise/follow/believe in/etc. this religion? Do theological experts class Mormonism (?) as a denomination of Christianity?

Re:
Im not positive on when Mormonism began, but I believe it began in the 1800's in the USA. Now this guy created mormonism, and it is a weird religion (my opinion). When you die they believe people go to different heavens and only the really bad people go to a heaven that is like hell. They have some explanation of why babies cry when they come out of the womb. Im not an expert but I know some on different cults.

Definition of a Mormon:
"Someone who accepts Joseph Smith as a prophet and the book of Mormon (translated from the Nephi Plates) as an inspired message from God."
The Mormon church examined and refuted!

Thank you
Their book contains a long "testimony of the prophet joseph smith" which I read. As I mentioned, 8 witnesses also testified to his accuracy.
Your linked site has interested me greatly - Islamic and Mormon similarities? Wow.

It interests me how those Islamic myths that site throws in my face contains accusations which I could level at Christianity - pagan festivals renamed and moved to another religion, etc... Hmmm.

Re: Thank you
Agent Uranium:
Please, take this suggestion. They beleive that the book of mormon is
another testament of Jesus Christ. Since they believe this, it would
be to YOUR ADVANTAGE to read your BIBLE FIRST and ask GOD to help you
understand those Scriptures BEFORE you get involved with a supposed
"other" testament.
I can tell you this, I have read this book of mormon and I find that
lacks any historical support (outside its pages) that either the people, places or events ever occurred.

A Christian explains:
quote:
They beleive that the book of mormon is
another testament of Jesus Christ
I thank you for your words of advice and concern. They did include little leafs of paper detailing migrations of Levi or Lehi and how Christ said certain things, etc.
I posted this topic on another board at around the time I did it here (the marvels of copy & paste, what?!) and received a tirade from an ex-Mormon who grew up in such a society. His final words pointed out how negatively it had affected him:
quote:
NECKWRECKER advised:
Please don't invite them back in your home. It is not worth it. Trust me. I have totally studied this religion inside and out. I have so many written notes on how fucked the whole Mormon thing is. I hate typing and am not going to get into it. Please leave it alone.
Strong words.

The thing I find most objectionable about Mormonism is the prohibition against masturbation.
Other than that Mormonism seems mostly to be about community and family bonds, which I can respect.

Interestingly, on my search for family bonds in mormonism I happed upon this site:
http://www.bikerschurch.com/
"Wow" springs to mind. They even deliver sermons on how to maintain your bike in winter!

Yes agent, they have taken the word of God the bible, and twisted it so it accommodates they're beliefs. Jesus said in not to do this clearly. Mormonism is a cult I would not get into if I were you. They take misinterpreting and deleting and adding stuff to the bible like the Jehovah's do to a new level. They made their own book.

They made their own book.
Oh, you mean like how Protestants use a different bible than the Catholics?

The LDS Restorationist movement, including The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
This site has a great historical, and ideological rundown of the Mormon religion. It sounds like a nutty cult that got out of hand, not unlike the Scientologists.
If you read the archeology part, you will soon realize that the mormon claims are pretty bogus. Also, read up on Joseph Smith, and the actual history of the Mormon church, which was a pretty violent one in the early US.

Yeah, but that was pretty much the result of heavy, violent intolerance against the Mormons.
