Primitive primates were present in the part of Gondwana Land that we now call South America, before continental drift caused the greatest case of speciation the world has ever seen.

My `island hopping theory`: if Australia still had a giant inland sea, the oceans would have been considerably shallower: islands would have been muci more numerous. They island hopped. It would explain the genetic difference between them and African monkeys, as you pointed out.

Re: The Magic Koala theory
Island hopping would reduce the distance to travel. Hence, more animals can be considered.

Islands erode just like cliff faces, from the power of the waves.

Island Hopping Theory
If I can revisit my island hopping theory for a moment: how many more islands would there be if the present sea level dropped, say 2m?

An inland volcanic eruption would more than likely force a group of monkeys living on the coast, into the water. Provided they survived the magma shower, a bunch of floating volcanic material would seem an appetizing alternative, as compared to staying in the water or returning to land.

As to their water requirements, until vegetation sprouted, saltwater would taste just like normal water to a severely dehydrated monkey.

If the green monkey travelled that far, the water problem is solved, insofar as it must have rehydrated itself somehow.

The only problem that I can forsee, in light of the green monkeys travels, is the difference in environments between Africa and South America.
