Re: I'm a pickin and I'm a choosin
I have never believed that Genesis was word for word literal.
So, so you take any part of Genesis literally?

Only the very first line:
quote:
Genesis 1
The Beginning
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
I believe that the universe, matter, thoughts, chemicals, elements and all other forms of matter and energy did not exist eternally but, rather, were created at some point.
To me, it is more logical to believe in an eternally existing Creator rather than the concept of eternally existing matter/energy.
As to the characteristics of such a Creator and as to whether this Creator has to be eternal, personal, and friendly (or not) I leave that discussion open as a sub topic.

Re: I'm a pickin and I'm a choosin
So that's the only bit of Genesis you take literally?
You also think it is more logical that something can come from nothing rather than matter being eternal?
You do also know that it is illogical to rely on a factor that you have no idea whether that entity exists or not?

Eternal Non-Living Matter Defined By Living Intelligence?
Brian writes:

Yes, I admit that my belief is illogical.
Think, however, how illogical eternal matter/energy is when evolved living products of this energy/matter attempt to define their own origin as a non living reality even as we ourselves are living!
Thats a bit like putting the cart before the horse!

It don't. Being right makes him right.
The god, as described in the Bible, is not one I would want to follow.
One of the many beautiful gifts GOD bestowed upon us, the freedom to choose whom you follow.
He is hypocritcal, fascist, contradictory, immoral, and overly concerned about my penis.
Yikes!
Humans are famous for twisting scripture (or anything else for that matter) around to fit their own agenda. I wonder what is driving your agenda.
When someone says one thing but does the opposite, that makes me less likely to follow them, and when they command things that make no sense and in fact contradict other commands, I begin to question not only his motives, but his sanity. If god exists, he's paranoid perhaps suffering from multiple personality disorder.
I get it. You want to be the judge.
Have att'er. You get a few years to do pretty much whatever you want.
After that.....
I guess we'll see.

Cain ate that apple? I'll be damned - I thought it was his mama.
My, aren't we a silly boy?
Unless of course, you think of one generation as a really really long time.

A bit ironic isn't it when we consider that God is followed exclusively by robotic morons?

There, sorted it for you.

Oooh, thems fightin words!

I guess that was meant as some sort of personal attack.
Sad you didn't have the balls to single me out, instead you attack a group you think I fit in.
Did you think I would be offended?
Sorry.
There, sorted it for you.
My, aren't you clever.
I think I will try this tactic sometime, when I don't feel like engaging in a real discussion.

I don't recall grouping you in there. Nice persecution complex you got there, maybe you are a Christian.

I corrected your error, unless of course you know the names of some atheists that have edited the Bible?
The only ones I am aware of that alter the biblical texts and the meanigs are Christians, that's one reason why there are upteen thousands of different Christian denominations.

Ya, I hate that shit! It's been a real long time since GOD participated in human politics. That hasn't stopped the death but it ain't GOD doin it.
Thing is, the book says he's gonna get involved again in the future.
Clean house so to speak.
Not only do I believe it's true, I hope it's true. I'm gettin sick of people shootin at me, and stealin my frickin car, and burnin my house down ( likely some dastardly evilooshunist). I'm sick of people stealing babies and killin them. Sick of companies poisioning me then selling me the cure, that doesn't cure.
People suck!
Please Jesus, make it soon.

Your word not mine. I see you read not for comprehension but for ammunition.
Yes, Christians are to blame for many horrible things. They are humans and like all humans, are in need of forgiveness.
It's nice to have.

Yes, Christians are to blame for many horrible things.
They certainly are, this religion of theirs has been an abomination on mankind. Nothing else has plagued humanity as much as the follwers of this fairytale.
They are humans
Well, I don't think it is really fair to taint the human race by including Christians, but at a biological level I suppose they are.
are in need of forgiveness.
I think people only seek forgiveness if they have done something wrong, so we cannot put all humans into this category. Christians, I suppose, really do need forgiveness for misleading so many people, and ruining so many lives.
and like all humans, are in need of forgiveness.
It's nice to have.

Re: Never condemn others on a charge you do not understand yourself
"So explain again how this justifies cherry-picking the laws in Leviticus and Deuteronomy?
Why are sins such as murder, theft, adultery and homosexuality so much more egregious in the eyes of certain Christians than, say, working on the sabbath, back-talking to your parents or eating unclean foods?"
First of all speaking as a Lutheran as opposed to a Catholic, all sins are equal in the eyes of God. It is another human sin to catergorize certain sins as worse than others. Secondly the "cherry picking" mostly involves the fact that many Old Testament Laws were more clearly explained by Christ (such as the Law about working on the Sabbath).
