Today, July 8, 2009, at 4 PM I will be taking the board down for the installation of the dBoard 3.0 Beta release software. It should take about 4 hours.
Software updates don't usually take this long, but in this case a full backup of the board (all software, messages, member data, etc.) is prudent, and the backup has to occur after it is shut down, otherwise people might post messages to a forum after it's been backed up, and their messages would be lost.
The software update also requires translation and insertion of all messages into a MySQL database, and because we have well over a half million messages this will take a couple hours.
I will bring the board back up as quickly as possible. There will be many changes, and I expect there will be some bugs, too. Please report issues and problems to this thread.
Thanks go out to everyone who helped wring out some of the bugs over at the test board.
Folks, sorry about this, but I just don't trust myself to do this right now. The test installation from scratch of all the changes just completed at the test board, but it's just too late in the day to start a 4 hour installation process. I will pick up early tomorrow morning, bringing the board down at 7 AM.
Ah, okay. That page has changed quite a bit. The threads no longer have page numbers. You have to go to the thread itself to select a specific page. The "Unread Messages" indicator is now a folder instead of a blue circle. The "Activity Level" meter is gone, replaced by a red folder color for active threads.
If you have any specific suggestions for how to improve the appearance please let me know.
Many beloved features will be making a comeback. The ones that are missing are because they were originally installed as hacks, and as I move closer to productization I need them properly integrated into the rest of the code, or because I didn't have time to integrate them with other new features.
I was forced to release the software now because the number of messages was growing past a half-million, and I needed to get them into the new database before the number grew even more unwieldy. In other words, I released because I had to, not because I was finished.
About the activity meter and page links, they will be staging a comeback, can't give you a date, though.
But you shouldn't need to rely on the page links as much as before. As people post to threads you'll begin to notice little blue arrows in the left-hand column beneath the folders. Click on these and they will take you to the last unread message in a thread. The board now remembers the last time you were in a thread and provides this link to take you to the first message posted after that time.
Thread-by-thread. It's not super-intelligent, though it will be made more so. For instance, right now if you read just page 1 of a long thread it'll mark the entire thread as read. A planned enhancement will remedy this so that if you only read page 1, when you return to the thread list then the "next unread message" link will take you to the top of page 2. Naturally there's no way to tell how many of the messages on a page you actually read.
I may have performed insufficient testing since I think I observe a minor bug, not positive about that, but I'll check into it later today.
