Linking to messages while composing a message has now been made much simpler with the addition of message ID's. At the top of each message you'll see the message number. Next to it in gray in parentheses is the message ID. For example, the third message in the 7/9/09 changes - How do you link to a specific message? thread says:
Message 3 of 8 (514893)
The "514893" is the message ID. Simply use the message ID with the new [mid] dBCode and you'll create a link to that message. To create a link to that message with its ID of 514893 I just include this in my message:
If you hover over the link it will provide additional information.
You can also find the message ID by hovering over the link to any message.
I've also implemented a supercharged version of this feature, but have not turned it on. I wanted to get a sense of whether members would like to try this feature. When turned on it causes message ID's, thread ID's, forum ID's, and member ID's to be displayed. These ID's can be dragged and dropped into message boxes, or you can right click on them and select "copy", then paste it into your message box. The new dBCodes are:
Sure it's possible, easy even, but it would have to be a different code. One possibility is to start with "mid", so maybe midt (t for text), or midc (c for custom text), or something else? Ideas appreciated. We'd also make new tid and fid codes using the same suffix character.
Thank you very much, not just for this, but for everything you do to keep this site in the air. I tip my hat to you.
No, thanks to you guys! You put up with my bugs and experimenting, and you give me valuable feedback for improvements. I'd do this anyway, but the help and company of the EvC Forum membership makes this a lot more fun! Now if I could just find more software help we could really make progress...
[mbrid] links to the members message list. On the todo list is a modification of this page to include basic profile information, similar to what appears next to messages and probably a little more, and you'll still have the profile icon to click on to see a full profile.
