To Perdition, Asgara, Theodoric, Stile,
Are you still seeing the problem with the last post button? I had never seen it before going on vacation, then while using hotel wi-fi I saw it frequently while using Safari on my wife's MacBook. Now that I'm home the problem has disappeared, both on my development machine and on the MacBook. Complicating matters is that I did make a few minor code changes, but I didn't think they would fix the problem. I also saw another problem I had never seen before, and that has also disappeared now that I am home. I would be logged off EvC for no reason over and over again, and with no discernible pattern. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Theodoric writes: The only issues I have is that the site is real slow right now. Rest of the net is running fine for me just seems to be EVC Let me know if the performance issue recurs while I happen to be online. I've been using Skype for chat, Skype name is "evcforum".

Hi Lyx2no,
Can you try logging in from another station? Or you could check some user-error types of things, like that the keyboard is working and is not in caps-lock mode. Let me know if the problem persists and I'll investigate. Is anyone else having problems logging in? PS - Should you really be logging in to EvC Forum from school?

A minor update has just been installed, but first let me apologize for the 15 minutes of unexpected downtime and the slow performance.
The site became inaccessible because the MySQL server hung. I have restarted the MySQL server and the site is up again. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do about the current slow performance. Both IAC Search Media (I do not know who they are) and Microsoft are indexing the site at the same time. I suspect that combined with my update process that the MySQL server became overloaded and hung. The update itself was fairly minor. In the status box at the top of each page is the number of active members. This number used to be the total of all members (minus those who were suspended or marked inactive), but it is now the total of all members who have been active in the past 90 days. Since tracking of who's been active over the past 90 days only began about 15 minutes ago, the number of active members is now only 36. I can update this to be more accurate by using data from the message database, and this is what I was doing when the MySQL server hung. I will try again when the indexing of the site by Microsoft and IAC Search Media completes. AbE: Forgot to mention: Birthdays are now only reported for members active in the past 90 days. Edited by Admin, : Add AbE.

Long links are now automatically shortened. For example, this link:
http://www.site.com/this/is/a/very/long/link/that/should/by/all/rights/ get/shortened?and&it&includes&arguments Becomes this:
The problem with links longer than 180 characters not being handled properly has been fixed.

An index of thread participants now appears at the top of each message page.
The "next newest thread" and "next oldest thread" links now work. Please report any problems/issues to this thread.

Your wish is my command!
I figured that not everyone would find this useful, so the feature will soon be enhanced with a button that turns display of the participant table on and off. A user preference will control whether the table is on or off by default. I apologize that I can't do this stat and that therefore you'll be sulking today, but it can't be helped.

I've just installed a minor update that adds detailed thread information at the top of each message page. By default the information is hidden, just click the little down-pointing triangle to the right of the context line, click again to rehide the information. The information is about the thread originator, list of participants, and thread details like the origination date and number of posts. I'll be adding more thread details as I think of useful ones, suggestions welcome.
A user preference will be made available soon to set the visibility on or off by default. Please post problems/issues to this thread.

I try to attach hover text to things that require explanation, and that's the case here.

The display of thread details is now under user control. Thread details are displayed at the top of each message page by default. You can toggle them on and off with the little control arrow on the right side of the context line. The context line is the one that begins "Evc Forum => etc...".
You can change the default display of these details to be off through your profile page. The "Profile" link is on the left of the row of links on the top of each page. Click on this link, then go to the bottom of the Member Preferences section and next to Thread Details Default select "No", then click on the "Submit Modifications" button. Thread details will now no longer be displayed by default.

I just checked the database, and only three members have set the default display of thread details to off, so once again...
If you would prefer not to see the thread detail summary displayed at the top of each page of messages, then go to your user profile page and under the Member Preferences section set Display Thread Details to "No". You can make these details visible on any message page by clicking on the little triangle link to the right of the context line.

This is a known bug, I'm not sure it's exhibited by all browsers, and I'm not even sure it's my bug. When you're replying to a message you'll see that you can display that message in regular or peek mode. Both versions of the text are present, but one is always hidden. Which one depends on which radio button you've selected. The normal text is displayed by default.
If you're not careful when copy-n-pasting near the top or bottom of the box the message is in you'll get the hidden text included in your copy-n-paste, and you'll end up pasting two copies of the message, one with just the text, and one with all the dBCode and HTML markup. My own opinion is that browsers should never let you copy-n-paste hidden text. This hasn't been a high priority, but since it's been mentioned I'll try to take a look this weekend.

I've made a minor change to the Post Totals that appear in the banner near the top of each page.
It used to be this year/past 365 days, this month/past 30 days, and so forth It is now this year/last year, this month/last month, and so forth.

If you want to rate a post low, use 1.
Once a message has been rated you cannot unrate it, a lack I intend to remedy sometime soon. I might have already mentioned that I like the Netflix approach to rating with regard to usability, and I'm planning to do something similar.
