Tyson at his funniest IMO
This to me is his funniest video, and his explanation for UFOs is *curiously* relevant to several current hot-threads.
Great delivery, great timing, hits the punchlines with energy...all-in-all he's a good comedic physicist. lol

Re: Tyson at his funniest IMO
Are you ready to be abducted?
Only for comedy material, but I will take something from the ship as Neil suggested.
and "curiously" he says there isn't enough evidence to know, and that he does not believe in a negative hypothesis. Strikes me as an open-minded skeptic, and yes, the proper approach for science.
It seems like Neil, you and myself are in agreement. As I wrote in the Pseudo-thread, Message 101 (which hasn't be replied to ):
quote:
Only when applicable, like when one asks my position on biological alien life. I would see no reason to hold to a negative or positive hypothesis in regards to that question. I agree that at that point, the only honest position is that of agnostic.

I guess great minds do think alike.
I'm not sure it's his funniest though, as I thought the first one was better. Of course that is a subjective evaluation eh?
LOL, yes it is.

Re: Tyson at his funniest IMO
Why do you distinguish between the two?
Because "funny" is subjective, just like religion. And no one knows why they like one more than the other.
Is Jesus funnier than Allah? Is Vishnu funnier than Zeus? Is Apollo funnier than Carlin*?
* There are those who feel Carlin was god.

Re: Tyson at his funniest IMO
Ok, on this one I agree with you. Excellent material and delivery.
Just don't ask me to describe why I distinguish between the two.
If I had to explain what I distinguished between the two I'd say that, in the first video he had a rehearsed bit of dialogue which forces you to constantly ask yourself, as you're delivering it, "what do I say next?" So you can't be as natural as you'd like.
Where as in the second video, he gets asked a random question which he didn't have anything planed to say as a response. Most, if not all, of what he said in the second video was off-the-cuff, improvised, dialogue. When you do that, you are usually completely natural. And as anyone who has ever seen a comic on TV and the same comic live can tell you, natural is always funnier to watch than rehearsed material.
Here's a comic who I love to watch live. He barely does rehearsed material. I've seen him do an 1 hour set at one club, then head to another club that same night and do a completely different 1 hour set.
Watch both videos and, at least to me, the improvised stuff is funnier than the rehearsed material (which you should be able to notice the difference between the 2 types).
From what I've noticed, it's always funnier when it's off-the-cuff and improvised. Maybe that's what you noticed was different between the 2 DeGrasse clips?

Re: Tyson at his funniest IMO
Now I know a comic can't tell the difference between a question and a rhetorical question.
He does, he just doesn't give a shit and answers anyway, just like that Taz guy.

EvC Forum talk show?
These sound like familiar arguments. Makes me think of what an EvC Forum talkshow may look and sound like.
Percy, you could be the Noam Chomsky in the video. RAZD and Straggler for the other two guys maybe? LOL

Actually you could trade Ann Coulter for Sarah Palin.
Maybe this isn't the popular opinion, but I find Sarah Palin kinda hot, in that sexy librarian kinda way.
Ann Coulter I think actually has a penis.

Re: Snippets That Tickled
Nessie....
Recent reports that the Loch Ness Monster swallowed two tourists have been denied by Scottish police. A spokesperson stated: "While it's true that two people are missing, there's no need to turn a simple UFO abduction into another of those ridiculous Nessie stories!"
- that's hilarious!
Did you get to read my some-what simliar story that happened to me? I wrote about it on the "Separating belief in ET life from belief in UFOs."
True story, I guess I should add it to the humor thread:
"I'm having a beer at a military bar talking to a civilian who lives near by. Some how the talk gets into evolution and I explain how life may have emerged from chemicals found on any ordinary terrestrial planet. I explained that there's probably many, many planets in our universe where some life has evolved; even just plant life and no animals. Maybe even planets that just have single celled organisms, or just bacteria, etc.
He flat out isn't "buying" what I was saying (his words). And asked me how I could believe that when clearly God created everything like the Bible says. Which I expected him to say. And he was cool about it, joking and not getting angry.
But here's where he shocks me (and I start laughing hysterically on the inside).
He asks me: "Do you really think some planet out there is filled with just plants or some weird animals just doing nothing? That they just somehow evolved from mud and crap like that? That's crazy! ... Anyway, let me tell you this story about my cousins neighbor who says he was abducted by aliens..."
What?! I asked myself. He doesn't believe that other things exist on other planets, but he believes that aliens from other planets abducted his cousins neighbor? Is this guy fucking insane?
But I didn't have the heart to call him on his cognitive dissonance (he would have thought that meant I called him a fag), so I made a joke about it. I said: "Wait, God made other people on other planets and gave those assholes spaceships, while we're stuck here?" And he (In a moment of clarity) said: "Yea... what a dick." And we both laughed hysterically."

Arguably the worst movie made. The Room, written, directed, and starring Tommy Wiseau.
Wow. its like watching a bad version of Eric Roberts.

Re: Onifre?
Is this our Onifre?
Can't imagine there are a whole lot of Onifres out there (uncommon name), so I'm guessing yes.
Damn! I've been exposed!
Yes, yes, that's me, about 3 or 4 years ago. I actually won that contest with that particular set. That's the only video of me on youtube and it was taken without my knowing of it.
I don't like to watch myself, nor do I like posting videos on youtube. I'm weird about things like that.
Recently, I did a gig that (again without my knowing) was recorded and played on a podcast. If you'd like to hear my stuff its toward the end of the show.
Podshow. The mention me and talk about me at minute 56:40.
I should put some of the material into context. Small venue, and there was a karaoke party in the room next to this club.
[abe] I found the link to a short film I was in. It was selected for the International Film festival and New Directors. Plus it was feature on PBS in NYC. Stand Up. I hate watching my fat face on camera so I didn't watch it this time. Enjoy
Percy writes:
Onifre,
If this is you, you are good! I have trouble hearing in echoey situations and couldn't make out about half the material, but what I heard was good. You probably don't need amateurs telling you that, but anyway, you were relaxed, engaged, good timing. I don't know why the bit about the kids arguing didn't get more of a laugh - maybe not enough parents in the audience?
The resolution on the video wasn't that good, but you looked a bit like that guy from the King of Queens sitcom. You were better then many of those comedians I see on the Comedy Channel's comedy specials.
Thanks, Percy. Hopefully next year, if all goes well, I'll be featured on the show Live at Gothem on Comedy Central. I'm auditioning this Tuesday for the Montreal Just for Laughs festival and I believe that is shown on TV also. I'll give you guys a heads up.
Brian writes:
This cant be our Oni, this guy is quite funny, must be a different Oni.
Actually, I've lost about 40 pounds since that video, so yes, I am now a different Oni.
Now, lets never mention this again.
