I know, I know, I'm a new guy to the site. And I realize if it's bad to advertise, in whatever form, I apoligize before hand. However, a couple weeks back, my friend Andrew and I debated the infamous Kent Hovind on his creationist talk show. We recorded it, transcribed it and hosted it for your pleasure. If you're so inclined, please save the link (do not stream, it will overload the server) for either. If you download the .mp3, download the .pdf as well, since Hovind comes off kind of quiet. The text helps a lot, trust me.
So here is the debate in .mp3 format. All 45 minutes worth. And is the transcript in all 20 pages.

I enjoyed reading the transcript but to be honest I can only think of 2 or 3 posters on this forum who would give any credence to the tosh Hovind spouts.
Full marks for taking the fight to him though and I think you are spot on to accuse him of having a seperate agenda in promogulating his views. Also: Bad form of him to bismirch your character at the end.

Hi! I think you did well to take the fight to him as well, and I think that you kept the discussion focused as well. Hovind will focus on minutiae, and it seems like you kept it focused on your areas of familiarity.
Nice job all in all. EvCForum is a great resource, too.

Not really on topic, but not worth a thread of its own:

How in the name of God can this possibly be accepted as a phd thesis? Even on a basic level the spelling and grammar of Hovind is not great. Also, the non-academic language (e.g. 'in a nutshell')that he keeps lapsing into is unacceptable for a thesis for this level of study. It is full of unsupported claims as well. Why is there virtually nothing referenced?
Take this 'paragraph':
Another man at this time was Maupertis, born 1698, and died 1759. He was a physicist and a mathematician, and a close friend of Voltaire. Both these men hated Christianity with a passion and wanted to do anything they could to discredit the Bible. Nothing at all referenced here! If I was assessing this I would expect a reference for the birth and death of Maupertis, a ref that supported that he was a physicist and mathematician, and that he was a close friend of Voltaire. The hating Christianity with a passion is unsupported and is unacademic language, 'wanted to do anything they could to discredit the Bible' is also not referenced. I intend to read all of this, but even a cursory glance through this is enough to convince me that this is no phd quality paper. It would not even pass as a Higher paper in a Scottish school.

The Dissertation Kent Hovind Doesn't Want You to Read
This "thesis" has been discussed on the web for many years. The link is to my favorite rundown on it.

Hi Asgara,
This was one of the things to jump out at me; {from the above link}
A thesis is a body of ORIGINAL research... the key is that it must contain original and new data or theories that ADD to the body of existing knowledge, otherwise, it's just a glorified high school theme or term paper. Compare and contrast;
Kent Hovind writes: I will be quick to point out that "there is nothing new under the sun." Most of my ideas are the result of the input of hundreds of Godly men and women through the years. I have attempted in this book to simply explain the things I have learned through many years of studying science and the Bible. Ouch. It's painful, painful stuff, like watching The Office, only more embarrassing. The poor thing. Mutate and Survive "A curious aspect of the theory of evolution is that everybody thinks he understands it." - Jacques Monod

What the hell is this?
No Index, no Abstract, the Intro is about him. Not even page numbers. How did this guy ever get a PhD?

If I had worked hard enough to get a PhD I would be well vexed: what a joke!

For those who hasn't read it, I kid you not. He literally started his intro with...
Hello, my mane is Kent Hovind. I am a creation/science evangelist. I live in Pensacola, Florida. I have been a high school science teacher since 1976. In regard to that last sentence telling us he had been a high school science teacher since 1976, I am reminded of a Kent Hovind quote I saw some years ago.
quote: I'm sorry to say, but at this point in time and this country out of all the countries on Earth, everyone should know that what goes on in the sun is hydrogen burning (fusion). It's a simple concept. In a nutshell, 2 hydrogen atoms combine to make helium and energy. Everyone should know this by now, not to mention a high school science teacher of many years. At this point, I truly feel sorry for all those students that were in his classes. Edited by Taz, : No reason given.

If I had worked hard enough to get a PhD I would be well vexed: what a joke! I credit Ken Hovin claiming he has a PhD to those who claim (aka lied) that they had medals which they did not actually earn or were in wars or military campaigns that they never participated in aka 'Stolen Valor'. This behavior is a form of narcissism and inflated-ego along with flat out dishonest deceptiveness. It is remarkable any moral person, religious or not, would excuse, condone or defend this behavior. Absolutely appalling! One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It is simply too painful to acknowledge -- even to ourselves -- that we've been so credulous. - Carl Sagan, The Fine Art of Baloney Detection "You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe." - Carl Sagan "It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." - Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World

Okay, I am now dedicated to the goal of getting my own doctorate from Patriot University. At what looks to be $45 per course, I should be able to call myself Dr. in no time. This is awesome!
