I am a relative newcomer so I am interested to know who people think is the best dabater in the following categories -
A) Hardcore creationist
B) Pragmatic believer
C) Pragmatic disbeliever
D) Rampant atheist

Just a bit of fun really so as I know whose posts to look out for and so that people can potentially be complimetory to others who they have spent much time and effort disagreeing with.....

The categories are as flexible as people want them to be so feel free to come up with new ones but lets avoid any wooden spoon type categories in the name of positivity

Acceptance speeches optional

Take it easy

My Nominations
I have not been around long enough to have formed concrete opinions but first impressions -

A) Hardcore creationist - Juggernaut Nemesis for a more considered approach to full on creationism

B) Pragmatic believer - Jar for having a consistency of logic that is hard to break down

C) Pragmatic disbeliever - RazD for the appliance of science

D) Rampant Atheist - Not sure if he would be happy to be described as a "rampant atheist" but Archer's posts against irrational belief and in favour of science in a philosophical sense are some of the best I have read here.

Forum Oscars - The Rebirth?
I started this thread way back when I first joined EvC in order to learn whose posts to look out for.

The EvC community has changed a lot since then. After a few beers tonight I thought it would be worth reviving to see what the current contingent think.
The categories seem less relevant now than when I first wrote this but for consistency they are as oriinally listed (see below). Feel free to broaden, expand, redefine or take with a pinch of salt.

The rest of this post is as per the original nearly two years and over 1000 posts (on my part) ago.

A) Hardcore creationist
B) Pragmatic believer
C) Pragmatic disbeliever
D) Rampant atheist

Just a bit of fun really so as I know whose posts to look out for and so that people can potentially be complimetory to others who they have spent much time and effort disagreeing with.....

Re: Forum Oscars - The Rebirth?
To answer my own questions -

A) Hardcore creationist: NJ still rules the roost in this category. Seems to have mellowed somewhat in his views but still more considered than most in this area. The social side of the debate is more contentious but.....
B) Pragmatic believer: I have to give Iano a mention here as a worthy adversary with whom I seem to share almost nothing in common other than a love of pubs.
C) Pragmatic disbeliever: RAZD for his exemplary pure evidence based dissection of anything irrational or stupid.
D) Rampant atheist: Rahvin may disagree with this category description but his cutting, insightful, eloquent and utterly damning of the opposition posts are sometimes a joy to behold. As I have said before he causes me to think "I wish I could do that".

Anyone else any views?
I really am beered up now......Hic

Forum Oscars - The Rebirth?
Yes it is Friday. Yes I am beered up again. Yes it is nearly the end of 2009. So I would like to open this years "Forum Oscars". The original categories were:

A) Hardcore creationist
B) Pragmatic believer
C) Pragmatic disbeliever
D) Rampant atheist

But this was broadened to the following by RAZD:

(B) Pragmatic believer:
(C) Pragmatic disbeliever:
(D) Rampant atheist:
(E) Open-minded skeptic:
(F) A category on his own:
(G) The third side of the argument:
(H) Horse rider (and dead horse flogger):
(I) Most missed:

In other words "do what you will". Ignore as pointless rubbish or highlight the people you think have contributed greatly in whatever "category" you choose to define. The choice is yours. I will reveal my own deeply subjective opinions if this gets any sort of response at all.

Re-reading this thread I can only say that you have yet again taken this category in the past year for all of the same reasons previously specified.

Re: Forum Oscars - The Rebirth?
Well frankly I find you scarey. You seem to write everything that a more intelligent Straggler would have written if he had just thought of it first. There I am pondering away. Then all of a sudden: (**Lightbulb Moment**). And then just as I am writing my incredibly eloquent and oh so logical and evidenced argumant I look at what has been written in the meantime and.....Doh!! That blasted Rahvin has got there first.

I hate you

Keep up the good work.

Re: Forum Oscars - The Rebirth?
Good choices!! Especially your nomination for the "Rampant Atheist" category Here are my choices.

A) Hardcore creationist

I think Arphy is an interesting newcomer in this category. A category which generally has a dearth of worthy contenders. Arphy seems interesting from what little I have seen of him. Alas I have been too embroiled in other nonsense to pay much attention to this category. I would also like to give Buz a nod as the most welcome returner. As maddening as I find the old coot it wasn't the same without him.

B) Pragmatic believer

I agree with your choice of Phat in many respects but my own personal favourite is Bluejay. Never afraid to challenge his own beliefs and someone who has taught me a lot. I feel genuinely enlightened about why people believe because of Bluejay (amongst others but he stands out) and it has indisputably softened my attitude to faith in my time here (believe it or not)

C) Pragmatic disbeliever

Yeah Modulus. For all the reasons you cite and more. Having actually met him I can also say that my respect and admiration for his reasoned approach to this whole thing has been amplified by the fact that I genuinely like him as a real person. I know real contact!! Radical and unheard of.

D) Rampant atheist

Rahvin. As discussed. But if I could be the EvC equivalent of a Mod/Rahvin hybrid I would die happy. Alas I feel that this is an unrealistic expectation as I am not intelligent, rational or reasoned enough to ever be that. So I will continue to be the black and white one eyed mutant with delusions of aspiration.

(E) Open-minded skeptic

Yeah Percy is a good choice. For many of the same reasons as Bluejay but not. If that makes any sense to anyone but me.

(F) A category on his own:

I can see why you chose Legend. You and he are worthy adversaries in the social forums where I disagree with you both on most issues. But I would suggest dwise1. For reasons that I cannot explain. Just read his posts and work it out for yourself.

(G) The third side of the argument

Otto Tellick for me. Alway different whilst always sane.

(H) Horse rider (and dead horse flogger)

Me. And RAZD. For reasons obvious to any regular here. I say this with self depricating humour in mind. But if I really believed that I would just stop. I think we are making progress. I think we are having an interesting debate. Yeah yeah I know I am an irrational and deluded optimistic fool. So sue me.......

(I) Most missed:

I would have said Iano but he has made a recent comeback. I would love the chance to debate with Jar now that I am less of a newbie than I was when I had the opportunity.

Some other categories:

Most Ignostic: Mr Onifre "What exactly do you mean by god" Perez. had to get a mention. Because he makes me laugh and keeps us all grounded with his ability to cut through pompous bullshit.

Most Insulting To Me Personally: Catholic Scientist. But all is forgiven Amen.

He who dares wins: Lyx2no for taking on the mantle of his predecessor with great aplomb.

I could think of many more.........

Re: Forum Oscars - The Rebirth?
Ah yes "wordsmithery". Good category and good choices to fill it. Dr. A is def worth a mention in this category for the ability to make the biggest point in the fewest words on a regular basis.

And further to the "Most missed" category I would like to nominate Kerusu. Where is the shaggy blond these days?

Social Categories + General Banter
Oni writes:

Definitely Mod, the rest of the disbelievers let emotion get involved in their/our opinions.

Screw you! How dare you suggest that I let emotion and irrationality influence me in any way whatsoever. Wanker. I'll tell you where you can put your dumbass nominations. I hope your dick falls off.

Oni writes:

Rahvin and you too, Christopher.

AAAAArrrrrrGGGGGGGhhhhhh. My anonimity is forever forsaken. But Chris, please. Only my mother calls me "Christopher".

Oni writes:

How can it be anyone other than the only true non-psuedoskeptic in this forum?

One time deist. Now an agnostic with opinions. I had best not say any more.

Oni writes:

I personally like Jazzns, obviously in the social threads.

I nearly mentioned Jazz myself but didn't know which category to fit him into.

Oni writes:

Catholic Sci takes this one. His beliefs are almost contradictory, but he finds a way to make it not so. Plus, like you, I feel he can insult me and I'm totally cool with it.

Ah yes our resident cheese agnostic. The man for who every slice of pizza is a voyage of discovery.

That was even more hilarious than when he declared (in all seriousness) that the existence of gods was equally as evidenced as the existence of dogs.

Oni writes:

That long haired liberal is greatly missed in the social threads.

Yeah where is he when us pro-hate campaigners need him?

Straggler writes:

Most Ignostic: Mr Onifre "What exactly do you mean by god" Perez. had to get a mention. Because he makes me laugh and keeps us all grounded with his ability to cut through pompous bullshit.

This brought a cynical tear to my eye.

Pull yourself together man! You'll be giving us a tearful acceptance speech at this rate.

I thought the social forums were under-represented so here are a few more categories for those with no life to contemplate (along with my own thoughts):

Loony Leftie: I am unaware of any hardcore socialist members but would love to hear from any who consider themselves as such.

Pragmatic Liberal: I am gonna say Rrhain. (***Blink***) Yes I did just say that!

Social Randomite: You Oni. Not that your views don't form a coherent whole. Just that you don't tend to always fall into the Lib/Con dichotomy as easily as most. So one for the aluminium hat brigade. How are those conspiratorial tendencies by the way?

Pragmatic conservative: Probably Hyro. Interesting and articulate. But I suspect we are destined to disagree.

Rightwing Nutjob: I personally think Legend has his moments. Buz is a prime contender for his crazed Obama views. But the true loon here is Artemis Enteri.

These things tend to get me labeled as anything from a socialist to an outright communist or fascist, which amuses me to no end for the inherent contradiction in those terms.

Frankly most of what you have said would, I think, be largely supported by the British conservative party. Who are hardly raving leftists.

With the obvious exception of your views on the current banking crisis. But even that wouldn't be considered socialist lunacy by the public at large here. I don't think.

And for what it is worth I pretty much agree with your analysis. So yet again you have said what I would say if I had thought of it first. Damn you Rahvin!!
