Something I've wondered about for quite a while, with this topic being triggered by this message elsewhere.
Now, bacteria reproduce via fission - One bacteria turns into two.
The question is, will these two be genetically identical? My uneducated guess would be "maybe, maybe not".

What is a bacteria generation?
There's not really a notion of "generations" in bacteria...
So we don't really talk about "generations" of bacteria, we talk about how long it takes for a population to double in size.
The term "generations" is used in reference to bacteria, such as at the Bacteria make major two step evolutionary nutritional shift in the lab topic. I only lightly skimmed a bit of that topic, but I didn't see any "generation" definition.
Would the population doubling period be what is called a generation?
